' oi-omjit _ dk AFTER TWENTY YEARS. A Winter Bight's Traeedy in a Haunted House The Hideous Dissecting Boom" The Corpse Comjs to Life Tinder the Torture of the Knife. ( Fem the Onto Ktite JourniL ) One cold night in December , 1852 , three young medical students mot for a purpose iu a third story , back room , of an unoccupied brick dwell ing house , located on Market street , Louisville , Ky. The building had been vacated for nearly a , year , and had the reputation of being haunt ed.Vhac gave rise to that evil re port will appear in ttie course of this narrative. The students were in the year of their studies that bring them their longed for diplomas , and aa they sat in this room drinking from a bowl of hot punch that had been carefully prepared by one of their number , they canvassed the many eventful incidents of their course at college , and speculated upon what the future had in store for them. The castles they built in the air were of the most brilliant description , and A KNOCK AT THE STREET DOOB that brought forth an echo from cellar to garret of the dismal , cob web-lined building that failed to draw their attention. It was repeated , and with a joyful of "There's Jack " cry Limpy , ac companied by a step on the hall that emphasized the remark , one of their number called his comrades' attention to the circumstance. They appeared to know the signal and to anticipate no further repetition , as they hurriedly left the room and went down stairs , one of the trio leading the way with a lighted can dle in his hand. On reaching the ground floor they did not go to the front door , but with one accord passed into what had once been the dining-room of the families who had occupied the house. Here they found a door that led to the cellar. Opening this door they descended in the same order. The cellar was damp and noisome , and was a place only fit now as a habitation for the vermin that warmed it. Picking their way cautioasly , stepping from plank to plank of the loose flooring that covered the earth , and causing muddy water to ooze above the boards at every step , they at last reached an object that appeared to be nothing more than a sack of po tatoes. Upon lifting the sack , how ever , the head and shoulders of A HUMAN SKELETON emerged from it , and fell to the ground. Eeversing the sack in stantly , in which operation hit com rades assisted , the man who held it seized the mouth and drew it to gether , after which -he threw the canvass over his shoulder , and fol lowed in the wake of the man with the tallow dip , while the third man of the party came last , and steadied the gastly burden upon the shoulders of his laboring companions. In this order , and without a word , the party carefully traversed the cellar , and ascended the steps leading to the deserted dining-room. Here they halted to readjust the load that weighed heavily upon the man who bore it , but the journey was imme diately renewed , and in a few mo ments the party were back again In the comfortable room that they tiad left. The room was comfortable by 3omparison with the other depart ments of the deserted dwelling. A ivarra coal fire was burning in a aearth of large dimensions , and the ) dor of the punch wa very agreea- ) Ie to the "senses. But whatever jomfort a non-professional mail vould have derived from spending i portion of a gloomy winter's night n such a room , the feeling would lave speedily changed to one of hor- or upon beholding the surrouud- ngs. The room was filled on three ides with glass cases , some con- ainlng from three to sis tiers of ihelving , and others being free of bstruction in the space from top to wttom. There were eighteen of hese cases. Each of these with inelves in them contained HUMAN SKULLS AND BONES hat had been taken from the bodies if which they had formed a part , ind there were also a large number if specimens preserved in bottles illed with alcohol. The heart , irain , liver , etc. , were in this man- icr exhibited and kept In then nat- iral state. Others of these cases ontained medicines and instru- nents used by medical men. The ases that were not shelved con- aincd full-grown skeletons of men , fomen and children strung upon rlres. In the center of the room ras a table about ten feet la length , nd raised about two feet off the round. It was covered with black il-cloth , and ono pnd of it was aised for the purpose of affording resting place to the heads of orpses laid upon this , the disseot- ag table. Upon re-entering the room the tudents lost little time in proceed- ag about their work. It was not novelty by any means that they . ere about to enter upon , and yet hey ono and all manifested the eenest delight in the Job. The ack was laid upon the table , loos- ned , and pulled away , revealing be body of a man perhaps fifty ears of ago. He had been tall of tature and of great muscular de- clopment. ? jo marks of violence rcre to be seen about the corpse as t lay stark naked upon the death- loth , and the face bore a pleasant xpression , as if the passage from ife had been accomplished without iain or vain regret. After placing he body in a proper position , with be head upon the raised elevation , be students divested themselves of oats and tjats , rolled up their shirt- leves and fastened them above the Ibow , and adjusted clean-looking lotbs , reaching to their waists , bout their necks. They then rought forth from under one of the lass cases a cedar-wood box about ne foot in width by two. feet In mgtb. From this box about DOZEN LAIMJEGLEAlHNa INSTRU. O . Ic icluding knives and aws , were reduced and laid upon a chair plo- ed within reaching distance of the ible. 'I we'll find out guess now if old ake Hinghaus was crazy or not rhen ho made that will , " said one f the students ; to which another ? plied : "Yes , indeed , we will. It's no real interest to us ; but if there is oiug to be a fight over that ten lousand dollars of his , there will 9 some satisfaction in knowing for urselves whether his real wife is atitled to it , r whether it should o to the children of his mistress , aa e willed it. Do you know what the ouble was between-him andhia ife ? " This , remark being addressed to le third member of the party , he nswered : "I know no more than any one. [ inghaus was a queer old Butch- ion , and would have his tod. In ict , that's what killed him , as we 11 know of course. Well , it's my pinion that his will was made very recently , and the money left to his 'old gal's' children , because his wife was 'given to quarreling with him about his drinking. " "Well , anyhow , we'll satisfy our selves to-night about that crazy story. For my part , I believe he was as sane when he made his will as any of us , and I'll bet mousy we'll find the cause of his acting BO strange the last few weeks was liquor on the brain , and nothing else. " These remarks from the first speaker closed the conversation , The men approached the table. One of them , who seemed to be silently delegated.to perform the operation , held in his hand A GLITTERING KNIFE. The others caught the corpse by the shoulders and raised it to a sit ting position. One of them held it there. The man with the knife be gan to cut at the base of the skull and around it The other , placing his fingers on the bloody opening thus formed , pushed them forward. The knife cut clean , and in an in stant the scalp was thrown forward upon the face , exposing the bald skull beapatered with blood. At this instant a tremor passed through the comae ; a second and a third succeeded ; A WILD SHRIEK followed ; and with a cry of most soul-curdling agony , the supposed dead man leaped from the table. The students , affrighted to death , could only hurdle iu a corner and gaze at the apparition. Shriek after shriek followed , and the sufferer tore the bleeding scalp from before his eyes and gazed about him with frothing mouthy and looks of de moniacal ferocity. When his eyes at last rested upon the students , he uttered a shriek irore appalling than its predecessors , and rushed upon them. He seizud upon the one who had held his body in position ; with a grip of iron he clutched his throat , and with a giant's power bore him to tbe floor. It was a question of life for the students or death for their assailant. The man who had the knife realized thesituation upon theinstantleaned forward and plunged the knife to the hilt in the heart of the unfortu nate wretch. With a horrible cry he sank down upon the body of the half strangled student , and in an instant a cold shiver that convulsed his frame , told that indeed he was a dead man. Now that the deed was done , the students looked at one an other as if one and all were stupi- ged. Then , with the bloody knife above his head , the man who had committed the act called upon his companions to swear AN OATH OF ETERNAL SECRECY then and there. With their left hands elapsed together , and their right hands on high , the three men swore eternal fidelity to each other in the great and damning secret that must forever darken their ca reer. This done , the body was again wrapped up in a sack. A large sup ply of combustible materials was then aoucentrated in the room and the torch applied. Ere the flames had time to spread , the guilty men were on their way homeward. The fire did its work effectually in destroying all the evidence of the [ crime. There were no living wit nesses save the three participants. One of these ( Alfred Burgess ) was killed at the battle of Pittsburg Landingwhile serving as a surgeon in the Union army ; Robert Craw ford , the man whose steady right arm had driven home that weapon of death , was killed upon an Illi nois railroad inr July 1869 , and Or son Holmes , the last aotor in the drama , died but a few days ago in Parsons , Kansas. It Is frem a little weekly paper , published in that place , that his confession , giving all the details of the horrible affair as related above was obtained.
