BSIGGS'S BABY.
Thomas BriggP , of Detroit , has a
boy-baby about teii months old , who
is admitted at the beginning of this
article to look just like his father ,
and to be the smartest boy-baby in
Detroit.
lesterday morning the child was
sitting on the floor , playing with
live or six big coat-buttons on a
string , and taking an < casional
nibble at un apple to bring out his
first crop of teeth.
Mrs. Briggs aud a neighbor were
talking away as only women can
gossip , when the baby hid the but
tons under a mat , and started to
finish the app'e. A bit of the skin
got iu his throat , and he gave a
cjugh and a whoop , and pawed the
air , aud rolled over ou his head.
'Oh , them buttons ! he has swallowed - ,
lowed them buttons ! " cried the
mother , as the yanked him up , and
shook him.
"Pound him ou the back ! " yelled
the other woman , trying lo hold his
legs still.
"Run for the neighbors ! " cried
Mrs. Brigg ! < , excitedl } ' .
"Oh , he'll die ! he'll die ! "
screamed the other , as she ran out.
' And the neighbors came in , aud
made him lie on his stomach , and
cough , and then turned him on his
back , and rubbed his stomach , and
jogged him about all sorts of ways
, until he got mad , and went to
howling.
Then boy ran for Briggs , and then
Briggd ran for a doctor , aud the doc
tor came aud choked the baby , and
ordered sweet oil aud a mustard
plaster , and told them to hold him
on his back. Everybody knew * } iat
< ihobe six buttons were lodged it. the
baby's throat , because he was red
iu the faceaud , because ho strangled
as Le howled aud wept.
They poured down sweet oil , and
put mustard across him , and wept
over him , and the mother said she
never could forgive herself. Boys
drove by calling out "Slab wood for
sale ! " and the sci ors man went by
shouting "Sharp ! sharp ! " but that
distressed crowd held th baby ,
down , and dhed their tears over his
whole length. The doctor was look
ing serious , and Briggs was think
ing that he hadn'tdone anything to
deserve such a blow , when one of
the women pushed the mat , and dis
covered the buttons.
Then everybody laughed and
danced , and they kicked the sweet
oil bottle under the bed , threw the
mustard-plaster at the doctor , and
Mrs. Briggs hugged thehowling an
gel to her bosom , aud called him
her "wopsj topsy hopsy dropsy lit
tle cherub "
A Dujl of Jewels.
One day , on the trip up , when
reading a magazine , my attention
was attracted by the glitter of a gold
bracelet , which , look where I would ,
flashed before my eyes , and fur
ther scrutiny revealed the fact
that the young lady who wore it
was particularly anxioua that I
should be attracted by it , aud , to
further her design , began cutting
the leaves of her magazine with a
silver fruit knife. For the purpose
of showingher thatl was not partic
ularly dazzled , in fact , that there was
another such in the world , I took a
gold pencil from my pocket , marked
i passage in my book , for my bracelet -

How much pork costs per pound ciu
f course depends in a great meas- s :

Because Sao Was Too Snort , He
Left Her at Home Too Long.
( Sew York Sun. )
The legal questions in the Tilton-
Beecher case are now in process of
solution by a court and jury , but the
moral aspects are still appropriate
subjects for newspaper discussion.
Going back of everything else we
find , according to Mrs. Tilton's
statement , that the primary cause
of the domestic infelicity of herself
and her husband grew out of the
very great dispariti'in tneii height.
She was too short , or he was too tall.
There was too much difference of
altitude betwixt them. He was
aanamed of her because the top of
her head only came about up to his
shoulder , poor thing ! just as if she
could help it ! And worse still , he
told her so , heartless ftllow !
And thcu , being mortified at her
diminutive appearance , this Blue
beard Louglegu , when he went oft *
lecturing , took a taller woman with
him , and left his little wife athome ,
all alone all alone ! Why didn't
be take them both ? Then the tall
woman could have talen the Hay-
polo's arm , and the wife could have
taken the tall woman's arm , and ,
growing small by degrees , and beau
tifully le s , they would have consti
tuted a very passable trio. The
contrast would have been less strik
ing because it would not have been
so sudden.
Or , again , could not Mrs. Tilton
have been elevated to the proper
height by the aid of stilts ? It i *
easy to learn to walk on them ; aud
stilts about three feet long would
have brought her up into the exalted -
, ed region , of her liogc lord. They
might have proved a little awkward
when she went to sit down in
church , but she could have had a
strap suspended from the ceiling
that she could hold on to during the
service , and , being she , the indulg
ent pastor could have been reason
ably expected to tolerate this. Or
she migbt have occupied an entire
pew in a reclining position. This
would have diminished the number
of pews by one , and consequently
would have had a direct tendency
to enhance the piico at the annual
sales , a matter of no small import
to Plymouth Church.
Stilts or something there should
have been to ameliorate or recon
cile the difference between husband
and wife almost anything would
have been better than the present
consideration to which they are re
duced.
We think that Mr. Beecher ,
though not worldly wise , must have
learned one lesson never to marry
another couple not nearer the same
height. He is witncps to the incalculable - ,
culable grief which may result from
it. If ever again a woman four feet
short and a man ssven feet long ap
ply to him to perform the marriage
ceremony for them , wo opine he
will say IS ay.
It is a little paradoxical , but all
the Tilton's troubles seem to have
arisen fiom him leaving her home
too long because she was too short.
