I ( Correspondence of the BIE. ) | FAIKKUIIV , Xeb , Oct. 24. i EDITOR OMAHA KHK : On my departure from Beatrice I 1 made myvay up Cab Creek , a tributary - ' utary of Blue river , emptying into ' the latter about three miles north of | Beatrice. This fctream is about 23 j milea long and winds its way in a southeast direction through a beau tiful and well timbered valley. There is more timber on this creek than any I have seen in the State. This valley now abounds in a large number of farms , well improved , having been settled for about fifteen years. Ten miles up the river i the residence of Uncle Sammy-Kirkpat- rick , one of those very sociable old- fashioned farmers , who is well post ed in the early history of the State , having located heie fifteen years ago , when there was no settlement west of Beatrice. His family were once run out of the country by the Indians , and he and his boys have stood guard many a day and night to protect themselves and property. It is indeed interesting to hear him tell of the caily .settlement and of its privations they endured when first here they were compelled to go to Nebraska City , (25 ( miles ) for all their clothing , and everything that they had to buy , when the trip oc cupied about one week , and their nearest neighbors were ten miles distant , lie has one of the best farms in the valley , consisting of 480 acres , about one-fourth of which is choice timber. The farm is well improved , with a good residence , barns , and out building. * ; while the farm is alive with stock. Seven years ago your correspondent was a guest of Uncle Sammy's , and shared the hospitalities of a frontier ranche , which was indeed home-like. Up the valley through the roman tic scenery were beautiful groves of timber , where well-to-do farmers have their home-like homes. I made my way a distance of six miles , then came to the table lands , where I called at a rude log cabin , and I found a well-to-do farmer who had probably the finest flock of sheep in the State. Then moved westward through that beautiful country known as the Plymouth colony , where the beau tiful undulating prairie was dotted with humble cottages in every di rection , and on the southern slope was brought to view a neat and com fortable two" .story fcchool house. Here I found one of the best educated families 1 have seen in this country , who were Indians , and had I not been Informed of their nativity should have never known them as such. jSexttomy view was Bo\v- eiville , which was composed of two dwelling- ' , store , postollice and school house. Ilcv. Mr. Bower , af ter whom the place was named , and E. D. Gage , the postmaster , ana familiesconstituted theinhabitants. Air. Gage is ono of that family .after whom the county of Gage was named , and the owner of one of the best farms In Jefferson county. From this to Fairbury is a high and rolling prairie , a distance of ten miles , and here t scenery was brought to view which cannot be surpassed in the west. Well im proved farms and good and comfort able dwellings can be seen in every direction ; where the land is rich and fertile , and on Hearing the h.am- let I found the country more dense ly populated , young orchards , and more appearance of an older settle ment , which , only five years ago laid waste , in a vast space of unin habited lands. 0" Hearing the southern slope the town of Fairbury was brought to view , which , during the past live months has made such marked progress that 1 was scarcely able to realize in that time that a town could lave improved so rapid ly notwlthstandiug the drouth and grasshoppers. About the advan tages and progress of Fairbury I shall mukft further mention in mj next letter. Grasshoppers and Sulphur. A gentleman in Holt County in this State had" twenty acres of the finest corn that can be imagined. When the gnisshoppera commenced operations , this gentleman invest ed thirty cents in sulphur and burn- fd it in various parts of his field , "made smudges" as he expressed it. The consequence was that he gaved it The grasshoppers stayed three days , .hut persistently re fused to touch a blade or an ear where the scent of brimstone lin gered. Just think of it twenty acres of corn saved for thirty cents. It was an experiment , that may , at some future dny , ho worth millions to the farmers of the west. The balance of this gentleman's corn was devoured as was not of his ueighborw. Let every farmer In Nebraska re member this cheap salvation. "We have this information upon good au thority and will , as soon as possible , procure all the particulars of the facts. Our informant saw this field and had from the gentleman's own lips the accountpf the way he saved it. OaMalc Journal Dark and Bloody Mystery. ( Sorth Platte Xelraskian. ) Judge St. Chur , of Ogalalla , was riding out some days since , and at a point several miles south of town , found the body of a man who had evidently been murdered during the present year. The victim was an old man as shown by his teeth A fracture in his skull shows plainly that he was the victim of a foul murder. His bones were fleshless Mitl as he lay upon the hill-idd , the phastly sight was sickening. The bits of clothing which were scatter ed around in the Vicinity of the body made it evident that the wolves had not waited for the body to decay but had literally picked the unfortunate victim's bones. There was nothing to identify the nun by except the fragments of clothes ut the people of Ogalalla surmise ttiat ho might be one of a party of emi grants who passed through last spring , and who evidently had a deadly quarrel on board. Of course there can be no clue lo the party or parties who did this terri ble deed. And loving friends may now be waiting anil wondering at the absence of a loved kinsman. ( Sliir Tiai-s , Oct. 2. . ) On Friday last Mr. James S. Stewart sold to Messrs. Foley fe Lippincott 26 three-year-old grass fed steers which averaged 1,343 pounds each , making a toial of 34- , J18 pounds , and netting to tue sell er $1,390 72. Buta short time since Ed PUcher sold nearly SOO worth of stock , Thomas Lippiiicott about $700 , Amasa AVarrack some $700 or SSOO more , Samuel Warraek about $500 , T. C. Hungate nearly or quite $8JO , E S. Gaylord nearly a $1,000 worth , David Clark , Waldo Lyoii , and other parties well known here and in Burt , larger or lesser amounts. Now that wheat is a drug on the market at 5S@GO cents , and consid ering that for the last five years the average price of wheat has been under , rather than over , 75 cents per bushel , and considering too that the outlook for wheat during the next five years is still worse than the past five , would it not be well for the far mer to take his pen or pencil and spend just one evening in what middle-men call "figuring ? " Esti mate the cost of 10 , 20 , 30 or more cows and their natural increase. To this add the cost of herding on a free and boundless prairie , and then add tlie cost of cutting and stack ing the winter's haj- . This , with the interest on the value of the cat tle , is the sum total. JLct every far mer who reads this make the esti mate and if any fail to find that , they have cleared 100 per cent , on their investment , we will refer them to any of the above named parties , who will convince them by actual figures , that they have erred in their calculations. Of course , the raising of cattle by a farmer necessitates entering largely into the growth of corn , which can , in ordinary seasons , be put in the crib at 1C cents per bushel , and the stumpage or cornstalk _ fields are worth , and will sell to itock men for $1.00S1.50 per acre. This item of stalk ground alone will pay the real estate taxes of every farmer In this county ; besides , too , the ad'an- tage of stock on the ground , is worth fully as much more , as it keeps the soil well fertilized. Had we time , we would 2've ' the cost of wheat raising , but the lowest estimate put upon this article by practical men , exclusive of the value of the land on which it is raised , is GO cents per bushel. That wheat culture is a failure in Washington county , is a fact that needs no dem onstration ( exceptions of course ad mitted. ) Go to the banks , to the attorneys , to the agricultural imple ment dealers , to the merchants , and what do we find 90 per cenF. of the 10 and 12 per cent , indebtedness of the farmers , as evidenced by their accounts , notes and debts , are on wheat growers. To the question tea a leading merchant here to-day : How about stock men ? O , we can't trust them. We nev er have a chance ; they always pay cash. cash. And And why ? Because stock , and not wheat , is their commodity. Every farmer in this county could to-day sell elf his threshing ma chines , liis headers , his harvesters , and cut loose from wheat growing expenses at 40 cents on the dollar , cash , invest the amount judiciously in thrifty stoclc , with even ordinary success , he would in five j-cars be an independent man. How" would it he in wheat ?
