Mrs. Vanderpool , a millionaires' wife , and a Lady Bountiful in her Way , had taken half a dozen of us down to her lake shore residence lor a few weeks. We were scattered about the cool parlors , talking society gossip and enjoying the breeze that swept up through the long open windows from the lake. "I wonder , " spoke Mrs. Vander pool from her corner , where she was watching us all in a pleased , satis- lied sort of way , ' ! wonder what has happened to Col. Qilbrath. I invited him down here , and he wrote me a note thanking me , but saying he was a restless spirit , find ing no relief except in constant ex citement and change , and his pres ence here would but cast a elooin over my party , so he must decline. I have been trying to read the puz zle ever since. He used to be one of the most brilliant and gay men in society. Does any one know what has happened to him ? " There was bllence for a moment , and then Burt Forney , who had been sitting on the piano stool , turning the leaves of a music-book , idly wheeled his handsome length slowly around , and answered : "I think I know , Mrs. Vanderpool. Col. Gilbrath was out at his sister's , Mrs. Delamos' , this last spring and stayed two or three months. I saw him when he first came back to town , and he looked five years older , and all his gay spirits were gone. I found out by a few things he said , that he had been jilted by some wo man , or made a fool of in some way. He is terribly cut up by the affair , the more fool he. " " Col. Gilbrath is the last man I would imagine victimized by a co quette , " spoke the soft voice of Car rie Vanderpool our hostess' gentle daughter. "He never seemed to like such women it is strange he should have placed himself in the power of one. " Only the summer before we had fancied Col. Gilbrath's attentions to the gentle Carrie would ripen into an engagement. We all knew she favored him , and wo had thought he was in earnest. The knowledge that another woman had made wretched the man she loved , must have jarred upon the girl's tender heart. "Ah , but men do not always know coquettes at sight , " some one answered. "They wear various disguises. " Burt Forney laughed , a short , con temptuous laugh peculiar to him " I never saw one of them 20 dis guised I could not detect her yet. ' ' Ho said , " I have no pity for a man who gets fooled by a woman. It serves any fellow right who is deu- ed idiot enough to go blindly into the snare sot for him. " "But If tbo snare is baited with tender looks and sweet smiles just such as honest women give to men they love how is a man to suspect ? " "There is a difference always , " Burt said , decidedly. ; 'Any man who .keeps his eyes open will see it. No won } an could be actress enough to deceive me wjtli pretences. " " But as good and' wfsp men have been deceived , " spoke Carrfetsoftly , "Perhaps ! as wi&e in other things , but not in coquette loie I have iqt ) lived for twenty-seven years and studied , human nature without learning some few tilings. I have seen women making foqjs qf men scores of times , when their game was as easy to read as print. J. have had coquettes try their arts upon me , but I met them on their own grounds aiifj amused myself , with private theatricals , flj- gave them the cold shoulder as the mood seized me. I never feel in the least danger of their wiles. Any man who is not lacking in sound com mon sense is never depeiyed by a woman. " "J beg your pardon for interrupt ing , Mr. Forney , but you will be so kind as to hand me my scarf from tEe "piano. This wud } is a little chilly. " It was Miss Sylvester who spoke. Miss Svlvester was Mrs. Vander- pool's latest acquisition. She bad a way of picking up rare people or what seemed rare tocher as geolo gists pice up rare "specimens , " and bringing them borne with her. Miss Sylvester she had captured a few weeks before , while off with a party at some mountain resort , and had made him promise to join her in July at the "Lake Castle , " as she called her residence. She had been with us two or three days only. Something pf a beauty and consid erable of an heiress , but so reserved the gentlemen were all afraid of her , and the women thought her "stiff. * ' This evening she was looking very beautiful and cold In some white frosty dress that exposed her neck and arms. Burt Forney , or Beau Burt as many called the hand some , dashing , fascinating egotist , picked up thp elegant scarf lying in a careless heap of sparjet beauty upon the piano and with almo&t awed politeness , approached the hauchty beauty. "Allow me , " he said , and dropped the tcarf about her snowy shoulders She looked up , with her glorious ( lark eyes , the only thing about her that was not cold. Her hair was dead gold not a warm , living hue about it. Her face colorless and cold , her mouth proud and almost freezing in its hatpur ; but her eyes were dark and lustrous , and full of southern fire and passion. It was not often their full splendor blazed on inslg ? niticant man. Her gaze was usually - ly speraingly fixed upon some object or objects several degrees above and beyond the uranjums of male bipeds even when she condescended to converse with them. J > ut she Hashed the whole glory of the dark orbs full in Burt Forney's face Just forp one second and then dropped them again as she said "Thank you. " Mr. Forney went back to his seat and his discussion , but he was think ing how very beautiful Miss Sylves ter WfSf when she lifted her eyes. He had not gjvej } much thought to this fair icicle. His indolence forbade his atr tempting to unbend haughty beau ties so long as there were scores of loygly creatures waiting lor his smiles. But that one glanceof Miss Sylvester had aroused his interest. "I believe she Is a'woman with a history , " he mentally decided. "Such a cold face , and yet those eyps have fire in them. " He appealed to Miss Sylvester , in his discussion , for her opinion. "Indeed , " she answered quiet'y , "I hardly know whatl think. It is a subject I never gave any thought J have always supposed flirts to be sort of CJrces : very easy to be recog nized ) anti dangerous only when approached. If rhen avoided them they were safe ; but once 'in' { heir presence , their fascinations lured men on to destruction. But I never supposed they could bo mistaken w'jieu seen , they are so unlike well , so unlike the rest of us. " "And In what did you suppose the difference consisted ? " asked some one. one."Oh , I scarcely "know ; I have tjjpught so little about it. Only I have seen coquettes , acknowledged to be so ; who were very gay , dash ing , brilliant in their manners , and seemed to endeavor to fascinate men by their conversation and ap pearance ; seemed anxious to attract , ' f ' * " T > and would even make advances ; they were usually highly accom plished and beautiful ; I supposed all coquettes to be like them. " "And I cannot fancy Col. Gil brath ensnared by such a woman , " spoke Carrie thoughtfully. ' 'He ab horred boldness or dash in a woman , above all things , and noth ing won him like modesty. I can not explain the report satisfactorily to my mind. " "Let us have some music , " Mrs. Vanderpool said suddenly glad to change a subject she knew to be painful to Carrie. "Gertrude , will you favor us ? " 'I.beg you will not urge me , dear madam , " Miss Sylvester answered , earnestly. "You know that I do not often play , save for my own amusement I would be pleased to listen.bo\vever ; Mr. Forney , I be lieve , is an accomplished musician. He is already in position. I think he would play if we urged him , Mrs. Vanderpool. " She flashed hef eyes up into his face again , with that peculiar , half appealing , half haughty glance , and she almost smiled. Mr. Forney needed no further urging , but bowing , turned to the instrument and dashed off * some brilliant air with variations. Mr. Forney was sufficiently inter ested to make some inquiries of Mrs. Vanderpool later in the evening concerning Miss Sylvester. "Who is she ? " he queried , "and do you know her history ? lam sure she has one ! " Mrs. Vanderpool only knew that Miss Sylvester was the adopted child of an old school friend. She had found her up at some mountain re sort , with a party of friends ; dis covered her connection , and invited her down here. Knew her to be an heiress and a beauty but nothing further. "She is very reserved and cold , but I think it would pajr one to study her out , " added Mrs. Van derpool , who was something of a inatckinaker withal. Mr. Forney thought so too. Ac cordingly ho asked permission to es- coitMiss Sylvester on a little picnic that was planned for the following afternoon. But Miss Sylvester had thought she would remain at home , and write some letters that after noon , instead of accompanying the party , so she declined with thanks. The party went off , but Mr. For ney strolled off" bird-hunting half an hour before. He would make an odfj one in the party there were complete couples without him. He came home in an hour or two , and beard bewildering strains of vocal and Instrumental music proceeding from the parlor. He entered softly. It was Miss Sylvester he found seat ed at the instrument. "And pray why did you decline to play-last evening , " he asked. "It was cruel when you possess so much talent and skill. " "I do not like to play to people often , " Miss Sylvester answered coldly. "They praise me too much. I do not enjoy their admirationj so I keep my musio for myself. " "But you will play for me ? " Burt said softly , a feeling of awesome ad miration for this strange glorious creature filling his heart "I will not praise you and I will keep my admiration all to myself. But I wj&h you would play , and sing again. " She did so , and Burt leaned over her entranced. But he only said "Thank you. I hope you will re peat this favor some time , " when she finished. ' The next day urt saw her stray off * to the shore , and he took a round about course , and reached the nook a moment after she did. He did not dare tell her that he followed her , so he feigned surprise at finding her tjrpt ' ! beg pardon for in truding. I came down to have a half hour's exercise in this quiet nook , as I often do , but will not dis turb you longer.
