( From the Virginia Knterpriso ) There are quite a number of blind Indians about this city , both men and women. The only blind per sons we have seen amnoR thePiutea living in this vicinity are adults. The eyes of the juveniles of both sexes are remarkably bright , black and sparkling. The blind men and women among the Indians seem to be able to go about with more facility than most white persons who have lost their sight. In leading the blind the Indians use a stick an old broom-handle or other stick of about the same size. The advanta ges of a stick over a string arc nu merous and important Iu the first place , as both tbe blind meuandthe person leading him lirmly grasp the stick , the former linda it not a little to steady and support him ; tlien all manner of warnings and signals are given through the stick. When a corner is to be turned the blind person is made aware of the fact by a steady pressure in the proper di rection until all again is plain sail ing , "When steps in the sidewalk arc to be ascended the stick signals the fact almost of itself , aud the same is the case where there is a sudden descent the blind person feels the change in the angle of his leading stick , aud knows what ground is being traversed by the person at the ether end of the stick. In case a string were used in lead ing the blind it would atlbrdno sup port ; none of the signals we have mentioned could pass between the person in advance and the blind man , and holding the end of a loose string he would leel quite lost. Two Indians traveling in this way will get along so well that one would hardly notice from their gate that the o'ne In the rear was blind In this stick business it appears there is a hint for white leaders of the blind. Here we generally see a man and a woman traveling in tuis way ; the man leading his blind wife , or the wife leading her blind husband. Jt is ten to one , too , that tlie blind wife is seen with a pappoose fcjung upon her back ; for being blind does not at all discourage a Piute woman. The eyes of the Piutes arc naturally good , but those living about the lake regions have alkali dust blown in their eyes while sleeping on the ground , and , indeed almost at all times when the wind is blowing hard. This irritates the eyes , and they rub them , when they become watery and more readily catch the Hying dust. Thus they go on , never wasjijng their faces or eves , and through this filthiuess what was at lirst a mere accident , finally becomes a fixed and incura ble disease , and they eventually lose tbPJr sight. Most of the Indians living nbo'it Pyramid Lake , "Walk er Lake , and thp sinks of the Car son and Humboldt have gore eyes , and it is from these sections that wo have the blind ones that are seen going about our streets leading one another at the end of sticks. Postmaster Prettyman Will Not lick Any More Stamps in Marietta. [ From the Marietta ( Georgia ) Journal , Sep tember 5tb. | . . Our little town had a first-class sensation on Monday morning , over the arrast of Rev. Wesley Pretty- man , postmaster of this place , for ofllclal unfaithfulness and embezzle ment of funds. The. post olllce de partment at Washington for a long time has been noticing irregularities and discrepancies in the report that would come in atlccting the Mari etta postoffice , and itev. Mr. Prctty- njan was more than once reported to Postmaster General Cresswell who , It seems , was an old school mate of Prettyman's , and who as signed him to the olllco at this point as a token of his high regard and friendship , and , so strong was his confidpnee in Prettymau's hon esty and integrity , that he paid no attention to the reports preferred against him. But under Post master General Jewell's ad ministration such discrepan cies were , not allowed , and he dispatched Mr. P. H. Wood worth a special agent , to look into the management of the Marietta post- office , and on coming to Atlanta he swore out a warrant for the arrest ofrrettyman , and in company with United States Deputy Marshal Geo. Chamberlain , came to Marietta on Monday and demanded the books of the post-office , and upon exami nation they were S600 short , which Prottyman could not account for ; he was at once arrested. Upon further investigation If was discovered that Prettyman was in the habit of issu ing bogus money orders and draw ing on other offices under fictitious namn.4 , and appropriating the mo ney to his own use having on the day of his arrest , drawn money on two bogus orders on the Posloffico at Dalton. His entire defalcation of money , orders , etc , we learn , will amount ft ) about one thousand del lars. - Be was carried to Atlanta at 12 o'clock that day , and Judge 15rskjne bound him over in a bond of S2.000 for his appearance at the United States Circuit"Court. Mr. Prettyman Is a Northern Methodist preacher , an intense Re publican of the Bishop Haven school , and whoso ultra sentiments ren dered him unpopular and distaste ful to our people. His family are living in Indiana. The post-offlce business la being attended to by George A. Fox , a former clerk under Prettyman , and who has been exonerated from all complicity in the matter. John R. Winters , Timothy Stevensand Geo. A. Fox were the securities for Pret tyman , who will see to its manage ment until a new Postmaster is ap- polni d , The Working People of Paris. Some Interesting details about the denizens of Paris , says the corres- pondentof the London Era , ore fur nished by that indefatigable ex plorer , M. Maximo du Camp. It appears , then , that even in this gaj" city there are no less than 816,000 working people. One-half of these are worhen , a fact that proves that the fair sax of Paris are not lazy. The rag-plcklng profession has fallen off since the Commune and nojy numbers only 6,000. There are seven large houses whose commerce cIPhsffcts entirely in the purchase and sale , of old postage stamps. We have also fifty-one dealers in false hair , and 1,158 barbers and fcair- dressore , who in 1872 sold no less than 102,000 kilogrammes of chig nons a kilogramme Is equal to two pounds. 'ThIs article of modem toilette , " says the writer , "is becom ing so difficult to find that agents have been sent out to China to buy up the tails of the poor. " Of flow er-makers there are 3,000 , and ow ing to the Imperial rage for violets , the number of that political embleux sold last year rose to 0,000,000. The employers orpatrons figure atS9,000 , and some idea of their honorebility may be gathered from the faot th.at there were only 1,802 bankruptcies Insai venclea last y car. the so-called liberal professions are 1,878 learned and literary , men ; 9,420 sculptors , painters and actors of the latter 2,058 are ladies. A touching fact among this sea of figures is that , whereas the literary gentlemen have only 800 domestics , , they support by the work of their brain no less than 2,258 persons , chiefly parents. Of doctors wo have 1,726 , which is about one to every 1,000 inhabitants. Behind this med ical army come 100 somnambulists , 561 midwives , 523 herborists and 734 apothecaries. Next , Paris compri ses 16,256 landlords and 54,872 re tired tradesmen , whose fortune , in the majority of oases , is the result of early perseverance , privation and economy. M. Maxims du Camp contends that there is not a city in the world where the people work more than in Paris , in spite of the 300,000 idlers on the boulevard ? , the 180 concert cafes , the 238 public halls , the 25,000 wine shops and the ' 7,226 billiard-boards. The workmen here are paid once a fortnight , on Saturday. The week that follows is invariably a dull one in the shops , since the majority of the men pay their devotions to "St Lundi , " un til their pockets become empty , and they are forced to return to the bench to replenish them. This is a fact which should be borne in mind by those who indulge in invidious com parisons between the French ouvrlar and the English workman. A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT ! Caused by the Premature Dis charge cf a Cannoo. One Grand Island Man Sericusly Wounded and Another loses a portion of his Thumb. ( From the CranJ Island Times , Sept.r.Oth. ) It becomes our painful duty to chronicle one of those strange and unaccountable accidents that so of ten happen when no one seems to be to blame for them. On Monday evening our respected fellow towns man , Joe Jenneman , was employed to superintend the firing of the can- nan a six pounder in honor of a political meeting of the Independents. Several charg es had been flreu , and while in the process of ramming home another cartridge , with the ramrod in his hands , the charge was somehow ignited , the explosion took place , and Joe Jenneman received its full force in his hands , arms , and body. His left hand was shattered , > \nd his arm above it badly burned. His right arm was burned full of holes , and the flesh badly lacerated. His clothing took fire and ho was seriously burned on the side and stomach before it could be extin guished. He also received several severe bruises in the abdomen , caused by the ramrod as it flew from the gun. The ramrod struck the ground about twenty yards from the gun , breaking into three or four pieces , which flew on aud struck the picket fence iu front of George H. Thummel'a residence. One piece about three feet long was picked up this morning , that had passed through the fence aud stopped along side of the house about the middle of It. Hpd the cannon been elevat ed but a little nioro the ramrod would have gone through Mr.Thum- mel's house. Uncle Platr , who was thumbing the gun at the time , had u portion of his left thumb torn off , which is fortunately the extent oi his injury. As soon as posibleafler the acci dent , Mr. Jenneman was taken to the resident of his mother , and the suigeons , Drs. Kellcy and Bruhns , scntfor and tlie wounded man taken care of. The-third aud fourth fin gers of his left hand Were amputa ted and efforts will be made to save him from further amputations. At this writing Tuesday afternoon he is as comfortable and doing as well as could bo expected. Uncle Platt had his thumb am putated just below the first joint , and the wound , though considered insignificant , is yet very painful , and unpleasant to have. MORAL Don't fire that gun any more. If it is to be tired , let there be intervals of at least ten minutes betwepn thp dischargesand see that the gun is taken south of Lieder- kranz Hall and turned away from all streets and buildings.
