SPIRIT OF THE STATE PEESS.
One reason wny Miller is opposed
to Hoberts is because when Hoberts
was in oflice before , he succeeded in
beating his friend J. Stealing Mor
ton , in tbat important salt land suit ,
[ Kearney Tress.
Look at the roll of counties unrep
resented In the Independent and
Democratic conventions , that tells
the story of how the Hepublican
party stands. The excuse is their
men are too poor to come , but when
a man's heart is in a matter we
never saw him too poor to attend a
convention. [ Plattsniouth Herald.
The question of the extension of
the O. & N. AV. R. K. is still dor
mant ; a profound secret in the beat
ing let us say bosom , of the John-
ies. Kedick hasn't got over his last
tantrum. HorbacliSmithKountze ,
Cre'ghton ' and the re&t arc all will
ing , but the leadiug member ain't
ready. [ Burtonian.
It appears the best thing the
Prohibitionists could do in their
late convention , for a candidate for
Attorney General , was to determine
to run a man who publicly declares
he is not a Prohibitionist in princi
ple. What kind of a way Is that
for the Prohibition political party.
[ Brownville Advertiser.
The platforms of the three prom
inent parties in the field in this
State , are before the people. They
nave many points of similarity and
but few r.on-essential differences.
Of the three , the Republican is the
most in acecrd with the time ? , and
represents more nearly the advanced
thoOgbt of the preseat day. It is
for honesty , progress and reform.
[ Grand Island Times.
The question of a convention for
framing a new constitution will be
passed upon at the coming election ,
in accordance with the terms of the
resolution adopted by the Legisla
ture last winter , which Is a part of
tlie Governor's proclamation , pub
lished herein. The necessity for a
new constitution grows more urgent
every day , and there should be such
a vote for a convention as will prove
to those who once defeated tbe will
of tbe people in tins matter of a now
organic law that there is to be no
further trifling on the .subject. [ Be
atrice Express.
All should remember that the
coming election of representative *
to the legislature in Volvos the elioice
of a United States Senator , and it is
very important that thN Senator
should be a staunch Republican.
Every Republican that votes for a
Democratic candidate , endorses the
present southern outrages , in the
assassination of northern men and
the killing of negroes ; and every
man who votes for a Republican en
ters his protest against such bloody
Ueporler.
"While we still plead for a now
constitution , without which there
can bo no adequate justice „ to the
west , still on the question of repre
sentation in the State convention
d-OJJ the State Ticket , the west
has no cause "to"eom plain , -and lees
not complain. On the contrary ,
she is grateful for the favor and
magnanimity of the east , in these
matters. All has been conceded
that could reasonably be asked.
We only remind the east that thh ,
though so generously granted , is but
a partial and temporary relief , and
that nothing ahoit of a fundamental
change of the fundamental law ,
guaranteeing proper representation ,
and providing a ready means of
changing the basis of representa
tion , to meet the needs of our grow
ing and changing population , will
give the neoes = ; arv justice and re
lief. [ Lowell Register.
It will he seen that Elder J. B
Maxfield , of this place , was a can
didate before the Prohibition Con
vention for Governor , but tbat ho
failed of a nomination. We rad
in reports ot the proceedings of that
straight-laced and ecclesiastical
gathering that the Elder made a
speech before the nomination , in
which he severely denounced the
Republican party for Its corruption
and general rottenness and expressed -
ed his determination to take the
stump against it.
The Eltler will allow us to express -
press our mild surprise , first , tlRxt he
should bo found in a Prohibition
convention at all ; second , that he
should denounce the party at whoso
hands ho had a few days before
sought the gubernatorial nomina
tion ; and third , that he could so far
forget the scriptural injunction
obout serving two masters as to
allow office-seekeng to disturb the
otherwise even tenor of his life and
subject him to the disagreeable iie-
cesity of going back on his own
record so unpleasantly often. [ Be
atrice Express.l
About a year ago public excllo-
ment was at fever heat when it was
announced that extensive pine for
ests had been discovered in Nebras
ka the one thing needfiil to make
its early and full settlement a fore
gone conclusion. But the chilling
blasts of winter came and the pres
ence of the Brulo Sioux in that sec
tion , and other obstacles arising to
make the matter exceedingly diffi
cult of Investigation , the public
mind has been somewhat at rest
upon the subject. Of late , however ,
we are beginning to hear the re
ports of sundry parties , who have
been making explorations in that
section , and it seems as if the most
sanguine expectations in regard to
the rich treasures of pine and cedar
and other valuable timber there ,
patiently awaiting the inroads of
the hardy pioneer , were about to bo
realized.
The wealth of limber is unques
tionably there , and we want it and
must have it. But the raging Xio-
brara , like her pretentious sister ,
the Platter will not float a shingle ,
and the problem of Its removal , to
any but American frontiersmen ,
would be slow of solution. Let the
government , however , establish a
military post there , and say "hands
off" to the lurking savage , and , the
long noglpcted.forests of Nebraska
will ring with the echoes of the
woodman's axe. The stately pines
and fragrant cedars will bow re
sponsive to the march of settlement ,
and Wall Street will soon be eager
to carve out a path and send the
steaming messenger to get it and
place it where it will do the most
good. Schuylcr Itc/jislcr.
r
Notwithstanding the violent op.
position against the above named
gentleman , from certain corpora
tions , the Republican State conven
tion did itself credit by givinj ; him
a unanimous nomination for re-elec
tion. Mr. Crounse has ably repre
sented the State of Nebraska in
Confess , and his course has clearly
vindicated that his heart and sym
pathies were with the people as
against the encroachments of mon
eyed corporations. We believe he
has aimed to perform all his duties
ineuch a way that the greatest good
to the greatest number would result
therefrom. fht he may have made
mistakes in minor affairs , js d.oubt-
less true , because in the matter o |
postal recommendations , etc , it is
difficult to be able at all times , to
pqrrictly ascertain what is the bcsl
thing to ba done.
The Smith faction in the Yalley
were bitterly opposed to Mr. Crounse
because the Land Office" was 'not
located at Orleans and because Mel-
roee and other rival towns of the R.
V. L. A.'s town site enterprises had
post offices established in them for
'
tbe be'tter accommodation of the
people , but their influence was
scarcely perceptible , although by
fraudulent means , they succeeded in
getting control of the county con
vention and sending a delegation to
oppose the wishes of the people of
this county. But Mr. Crounsa was
the almost unanimous choice of the
people , and now that he has been
ro-nominated by them ilono , we
are certain that he will do every
thing in his power that can tend to
advance their interests and merit a
continuation of their confidence and
esteem. Let Harlan and other
counties of tne valley , give him a
rousingmajority. [ Republican -
ley Tribuno.
Our Democratic friends , in their
remarks upon the Republican nom
inations , do not slight our contin
gent Congressional candidate in the
least , and on this score the Honora
ble Pat. O. Hawes , of Omaha , has
certainly no cause of complaint.
But when ho arrives in Washington ,
with his certificate of election in his
hand , they mav. be astonished to
find that they have underestimated
his abilities , llis power as a ward
politician is even now generally
known and appreciated in Nebras
ka's metropolis , and as his field
of operations widens and be
comes national it will be found that
his strength has developed in the
same proportion. Both his names
to be sura are strongly democratic ,
separately or collectively , and combining -
bining them doosn't make them
stronger. But it is with his names
that democracy b3gins and ends
divested of these a d there isn't an
ounce of the article about him. He
isn't even Irish , hut a full blooded
American , and his naires tell lies
about him and slander him. But ,
admitting that he is a "tlnn" can
didate , what does it signify ? It is
a "thin" office , too , and Pat can do
just as much good or harm as any
other man. it was because of his
fitness for that place that ho was
nominated , and for the same reason
he should be elected. There are
also other reasons. one of
which is that lie can make
more money out of the position
than other men. It was the argu
ment used in tlie nomination ,
and it is just as good for the election.
He has something over 3200,000 in
claims to put through , and Contin
gent Congressman If awes , could got
a hearing where simply Pat O.
Hawes , citizen of Nebraska , would
not be recognized. In spite of all
the Democracy can do or say VYC are
for Patrick first , Patrick last and
Patrick all the time. For contin
gent congressman , hurrah for
Hawes. [ Kearney Press.
Grasshopper Gluttony.
While a healthy oxmay be a very
fair , steady-waited digester , there is
no comparison between the slow as
similating process of his hurley
bread-basket and the quick electric
stomachic machinery of the speedy
and voracious grasshopper. A sound ,
valid member of this nomadic fam-
ly of gluttons can cat , d : sst-asd ex
trude three times his own weight in
green corn ; four times his bulk in
peaches , without sugar or cream ; six
times his stature in raw turnipsjfour
pounds of green tobacco and a peck
of onions every twenty-four hours.
And radishes , which are quite try
ing on the ordinary stomach , the
grasshopper digests as a calf doe
milk.
Powerful Brandy.
' "
[ Cariou Tribans"
A gentleman who has for years
lived on the banks of the Carson
River came to town on Thursday
evening to attend the Jones recep
tion. IIo took a little champagne
with Jones and afterwards com
menced on brandy. After taking
two drinks he caught himself taking
his shirt studs out and putting them
in a friend's vest pocket ; after the
third drink ho stole his own watch.
We passed him on his way to the
railroad depot , and heard him mor
alizing thus : "If that there brandy
is cheap at two bits a drink , how.
much ia Carson River water worth
at nothing ? I got that fellow's
watch and stucis , and if I'd took
another drink , I'd had his boots. "

Frazicr's Great Ecnicdy
The people ot tin United States h-tro been
humbugged with all kin'Is of Patent Mwllcines ,
quacks and imposters ( for the past faw years ,
in a most shameful inaiinrr. The writer of the
following 13 one of tba rictima , and wlibea to
present a Tory plain case.
BelioriDg that by cleansing the blood was
the only true way of banishing disease , and
being a great sufferer from weak lungaanda
scrofulous afiectiou , and after trying many
kinds of Patent Medicine * and th * most
eminent Physicians , I commenced doctoring
myself , and at last d-scoTered a Blood Searcher ,
or Root Bitters , which not only gare me im
mediate releif , but alter a few weeks eOected
a radical cure. The cough left me , my lungs
became strong and sound , mr appetite good ,
and the scrofulous disease had disappeared.
/Vellng confident that my DlscoTerr posfMsnl
wouJsrful healing Tirlnes , 1 gar * ft to otfirrH
ifflicted , and found it eOectedthe most miracu
lous cures in thousands of rases , not alone
curing Coughs , Consumption , Asthuia. Catarrh ,
Scrofula and Weak Lungs. butUall diseases
caused from huruonin the biood.vTIie demand
from mr friends and others bearlilg about these
Bitters becoming ery great , I commenced put-
t'ng them up for sale , railing 'nem FRAZIhR'S
ROOT BITTERS. I was at first backward in
presenting cither myself or medicine to the
public-not being a Patent Medicine Man , but
I am getting brarely o er that. I liara sold
thousand ! of bottles cf my Root Biller ? , and
it is my desire and determination to place the
same within the reach of every sutlerlng man ,
woman and child on the face of the cirUized
globe.
Thegiand principle that operates in these
Root Bitters is the power they posse * * in cleansIng -
Ing the turgid blood and bauisbing the Tile
humors from the system. Root Bitters are
strictly a Medicinal Preparation , compounds
from roots combined with herbs and plants ,
many of whi.h were used in the gond old days
of our forefathers , when people were cured by
some simple root or herb , and whan Calomel
and other poisuns of the mineral kingdom
were unknown.
They open all the natural passages of the
body , cast out disease , take away all sickness
and build up tha bysteru with imro blood ,
bence they must reach all diseases by purifica
tion and nourishment.
No person can take Root Bitters and remain
long unwell. Victory upon rictory they IUTO
gaiaed orar disease and oeath m all stations
and conditions in life. They are constantly ef
fecting cures of the utmost importance. For
Consumption , Asthma , Scrofula , Scrofulous Eruptions -
ruptions , Catarrh , Weak Lungs , Lost Yitalltv
and Bruken-down Constitutions , these Root
Bitters are univaisally admitted to be the moat
wonderful Medical Dirtorcry known to the
world. 1'tcir pectoral healing propmiei re ne-
trata every portion of the human frame , sooth
ing the Lungs , strengthening the Stomach ,
Kidneys and Liver , cleansing the blood from
every kind of humor. No other medicine will
cure Chronia Rheumatism , Neuralgia ,
Heart Disease , Fits , Dizziness , Headache ,
Dyspepsia , Fever and Ague , Costlveness , Pile * ,
Urinary Diseases , Kidney Disease , and Liver
Complaint , so quickly as this Root Bitters. All
such diseases are caused from a bad stomach
and a poisonous condition of tba blood. For
weakly , nervous youngmen , suflerlng from loss
ot memory , loss of energy , etc. , caused from
abuses in early lUe.and to delicate females.these
strengthening Root Bitters are especially re-
commgnded. One bottle will do more toward
eradicating Syphilis , Scurvy , Tetter , Fever
Sores , Ser Eyes , lurnori. Cancerous forma
tions , Dropsy , Erysipelas , bait Rheum , Ulcers ,
