THE GHOST OF HARTLY-HALL
( .Concluded. )
And one gusty November even
ing , when the gas flared up cheerily
in the black panelled corridors of
Hartly-hall , the dream came to an
end , Elsie stood before her dress
ing-glass , , dresied for a ball. A robe
of soft turquoise velvet swept far
behind her , and meshes of creamy
lace covered her white , baby-like
shoulders and dimpled arms. She
was clasping a pearl bracelet on her
wrist , when her maid burst into
the room with a cry of affright.
"Oh , ma'am , it's after me. "
Janet flung the door to and locked
it , shivering with terror.
"What's -after you ? " cried her
mistress , dropping her bracelet in
dismay.
"The ghost , ma'am. Sure , every
servant in the house has seen it
afore to-night , and i wouldn't be
lieve them. Hut there it was , walk
ing up and do vn the south corridor.
Och , but it makes my blood run i
cold to think of it. "
"Xonsense ! " laughed Mrs. Hart-
ly. "What a fright you gave me
for nothing. A ghost , indeed !
Janet , child , it's some idle fellow
playing a joke on you. What was
it like ? "
Janet was sobbing hysterically
with fear , but .she dried her eyes
and looked Mjberly at her mistress.
"A joke , ma'am ! Sure there's no
joking about yon thing the tallest ,
thinnest , whitest spirit of a man I
ever laid eyes on ; clad in black gar
ments like a friar's , and an awful
splotch of blood on one of his sunk
en cheeks
Janet's sentence was never fin
ished , for with a cry that rang
through the house like a wail , her
mistress threw up her hands and
fell at her feet in a dead faint.
"The Lord save us , " ejaculated
the girl , a < ? in a panic of terror she
rushed to the bell-rope and sent
peal after peal ringing through the
house.
In a moment Trevanion Harily
and the the servants were battering
at the door , which was opened at
length by the frightened Janet.
Elsie lay unite and stirless , a
crumpled heap of velvet , lace and
jewels , her little hands tightly
nlench"d on her bosom. Trevanion
picked uer up and carried her to the
bed in the room adjoining , where&he
lay senseless &o long that the awed
servants began to fear the swoon
was death. -
"What has done this ? Janet , was
she ill or what ? " cried Trevanion ,
chafing the cold hands in despair.
And Janet told her story in an
awed whisper , while the face of the
liusband grew whiter and whiter
until it rivaled Elsie's in color.
"A man in black clothes , did you
say ? " he said sharply. "Don't
you think it was Scotch brogaus
and tartain plaid , my woman ? "
"No , I don't , " replied Janet
stoutly ; "and you'll be frightened
yourself if you ever meet it. "
Trevanion shut his teeth in silent
rage ; for again the tormenting
thought took possion of him that
Elsie had a secret , and , to add to his
perplexity , the first word Elsie ut
tered when life and sense came to
tier was "Bruce ! " Slowly , slowly ,
the old trouble came back to Elsie
is she lay staring up into the stern ,
set face of the husband she adored.
She held up her hands beseechingly.
"Save me ! " she muttered feebly.
"Save mo from it , Trevanion. It
tvould be worse than death to fall ;
into its hands. "
"A shost will injure nobody , El
sie. If there is nothing in | he flesh
pou fear , you need not dread a
; host. "
He smoothed her damp hair away
'rom her white temples as he spoke ,
DUt Elsie ftelt the distrust in his
rolce. and fell into a passionate fit
if weeping. Trevanion motioned
; he servants to leave the room ,
rhen he besought Elsie to unburden
aer mind to him , and to withhold
joining that might , in the future ,
bring trouble between them.
' You need not be afraid to confide
in me , love , " he said , soothingly ,
'for nothing butactual crime could s
3ome between us. "
Actual crime ! Elsie closed her
syes , and an Icy coldness fell on her ,
for to keep her husband's love she
must bear h r secret to the end.
"It's nothing , Trevanion , " she
said at last ; "I believe Jane's ghost
tias unsettled my mind. "
And with that explanation Tre-
rauion had to be content , for Elsie
ivas as firm as a rock. "The end
ivill couio soon enough , " she
Jiought ; "let him cast me off then ,
f he will. If a merciful God had
raly taken me out of the world be-
"oro I Jjnew what bitter dregs lie at
ihe bottom of a cup of bliss. "
For hours ishe lay there , white ,
sleepless , staring , her hands clasped
ibove her head , and her husband
pacing the room , watching her
mxlously.
For If over a jnau worshipped a
iroman , that man was Trevaniou
Ffartly the very madness and in-
enslty of his love transforminc it
nto a passion that might at any
noinont flash out into open jealousv.
IVhen she arose ho hovered around
ler tendorh'j loading her with at-
entions and caresses that turned
31sie sick with happiness , yet al-
vays watching , watching , until his
rife grew white and spiritless , and
ejt his love a sword suspended over
ler head.
The ghost meanwhile was not
die. It had been soon repeatedly
n the house and on the grounds ,
jut oftener in the south corridor ,
.vhich adjoined Mrs.Hartly's rooms.
\nd it began to be rumored that
aartly-hall was haunted since the
tdvent of its mistress , aud that the
naster ate little and slept less , and
iis wife was crowing as white as a
; host herself. The last member of
his highly respected Hampshire
amlly was evidently under a dis
graceful cloud. But then it was
food for him , everybody said how
sould ho expect any better when he
lad so little sense as to marry a girl
ic had fisued out of a Scotch lake.
Vnd everybody is generally right ;
brTrovanJon Hartly had nobody to
aank Tor his mlsoiy buthiniself.
Janet saw it ; the butler , cook and
botman , everybody but Elsie , who
yatched aud longed and hungered
or a sight of that ghastly face , with
he splatph of blood on its sunken
iheek. The winter sot In wjjd and
tormy ; the wind whistled down
rom the bleak hills , and whirled
oughingly up the long , yew-shaded
i venues ; the ivy branches wildly
ind drearily heqt a dull refrain on ; , -c
he chapel wlndo\vs j but still Elsie I
taunted the breezy corridors and
dndy terraces , hoping , praying for
i glimpse of the ghost to end her
uspense or confirm her fears.
One bitter day id mid-Winter
? rpyanon } was suddenly called from
mine "on urgent business. That
tight Elsie seemed oppressed with Q
n unusual restlessness , and arising '
rom her bed at dead of night she
lipped her tiny feet into velvet slipr
> ers and wrapping herself up in a
rarm , crimson shawl bhe went out
o pace up and down the south cor-
ider. The full moon was sailing
Jjrough a clear sky and her lament -
> ent rays lit up the corridor. And
here , right before Elsie's eyfs. in a
> road , bright patch of moonlight ,
toa4 the ghost , the venerable ,
> lack-robed ghost , wth } the ghastly
ace , and the awful splatch of blood
ip. Jts sunken cheek. And a cry ,
more human than ghostly , broke
from its lips as it bounded forward
and took Elsie in its arms , kis-sing
her brow and lips and the hair that
fell about her face like a golden
cloud.
"JSIydarling ! " it cried , "my
little golden-haired girlee , how I
have longed for this. "
.But Elsie tore herself away from
the ghostly arms , and cried out
fiercely :
"Bruce , why did you come ? "
11 Why did I come ? " There was
a heart-throb in every word. "Ah ,
girlee , girlee , when you know that
there is not another human being
on the face of the earth that I love
as well as you. "
" You mustgo away. irou have [
done harm enough already , heaven
knows , for Trevanion mistrusts me
now. You have been the bane of
of my li.'e. You squandered every
cent ot your inheritance ; you
begged and honowed and stole
mine until you left me without a
dollar. You forged and robbed , and
Oh , Bruce at last took the life of
the good old man who had been our
guardian , and drove me into such
endless misery and torment that I
threw myself into the loch to rid
myself of it. And then Trevanion
came and rescued me and carried
me away from the scene of my mis
ery , never doubting or suspecting
that 1 had loved such a sin-s > teepeJ
creature as you. Go away ; go , be
fore you tnke me from the greatest
blessing He ever gave me the love
of a good , honorable man. "
She made a motion as if to leave
him , but he caught her in his arms
and forced her to look up into his
face. Death stared down at her ,
and for a moment Elsie fell so sick
and faint that she fancied they were
going over the dark river together.
" .Let me go , Bruce , " she said
faintly ; "fie might come and I
would be ruined. "
"Let him come. Do you think I
have haunted this house all these
weeks to let you go so lightly ? O ,
Elsie , you don't know what it is to
be dying yes , dying for love ! To
get only a kick or d cuff when your
whole soul yearns for a kind word.
Let me stay , Elsie. They would
not find me here , and it won't be
long until I am a ghost in very
truth. "
Elsie's heart was softened. She
lay in his arms aud cried like a lit
tle child. For one day this outlaw
ed creature hiding from the law had
been pure and good and tenderly
beloved. What had driven him
into the downward road none hut
God , who rules the destinies of the
strong and weak , ever knew. And
the youjj wife put her arms around
liis neck and kissed the thin cheeks
passionately.
"Oh , Bruce , if you only could ! I'd
Freely give you shelter ; but he is so
[ > roud and stainless , he would dis-
3wn me if he knew I had ever loved
i felon and a murderer. And why
lid you ever bring me such sorrow ? "
"God knows , girlee ! Unless Ihe
levil tempted me , for it wasn't be-
jause I didn't love you. Ah ! littie
> ne , it will be like tearing the heart
> utof me to leave you now. "
He fell to kissing the lovely lily-
ace with such a passionate , hunger-
ng earnestness that Trevanion
[ Tartly , coming softly down the cor- '
idor , his face distorted with wrath , '
ind pain , cried out like an enraged
jeast , as he tore his wife from the
jhostly arms and flung her from
jini. She fell , her head striking
he oak paneling of the wall with a
lull thud The ghost snatched her
o his breast with a cry of agony.
' My sister my only sister ! killed
hrough me. "
Trevanion stood like one stunned.
Fbis , then , was the secret of Elsie's
> ast life. The sister of a felon and
i murderer ! For every word the
inbappy pair had uttered had been
arried to his ears as he stood con-
ealed behind a pillar , his worst
ears of an old lover , or possibly hus-
land , in that unknown past which
roubled him so much since the
tight Elsie's white lips unconscious-
y murmured "Bruce , " realized ,
The servants , aroused by loud
vords and the brother's cry of hor-
or , gathered about the group In the
outli corridor.
As a stream of lamp-light fell on
he scene they started back , with an
nvoluntary cry , for their mistress
ay in the arms bf the "friar-like
[ host , " with a horrible ghastly
vound on her white forehead , and
he master stood like one in a night-
nare , striving to speak , but could
lot for the choking In his throat.
"Take her away , " he groaned ,
vith a gasp. "I have misjudged
ind killed her "
The brother carried her back to
icr own , room and laid her on the
> ed. He dropped down in a sort of
aint and the servants lifted him
ind carried him back to a room in
he south corridor , where for weeks
md days he tossed and raved in the
lelirlum of fever. Elsie had not
teen so seriously injured as at first
upposed , and after the first shock
ras over rallied with a sort of reek-
ess pournge and. pjnced herself at
he bedside of her dying brother.
Trevanion kept out of her sight
3 much as possible , for he dreaded
o meet the sad , appealing look of
he azure eyes that seemed to plead
o eloquently for mercy , when he
: new that he alone hmi been brinj
ml unjust.
One morning In February he was
ummoned to the bedside of the
ying man , and felt relieved when
e found Elsie was not there. The
