General Ouster's Expedition Thereto. Extracts from the Diary of Gen. George A. Forsytu. Tne following are extracts from the diary of Gen. George A. For- syth , who accompanied Maj. Gen. Ouster on the Black Hilla expedi tion : So. 16 , Saturday , July IS. Crossed the Bad Lands without yery much trouble , finding a good road through the clay and sand , and having only one bad ravine to cross , and then kept the crest of a series of hills or divides , until we finally , from the top of the highest one , came down into the Belle Fourche country. After coming into the first valley , where the grass was pretty good , we watered at a ravine , where we found water at the bottom of a dry creek ; and , when I use the expression "dry creek , " I mean a water-course in which there are standing pools of good water , but which is not a flow ing stream. Moving forward over a rolling country , of poor , sandy soil , and crossing a succession o" low hills covered with stunted pine : and a few scrub oaks , we finally came out on some high hills , cov ered with slate and sandston ridges , which overlook THE BELLE FOURCHE , or north fork of the Cheyenne Kiver. Descending these hills , we encamped in the stream , which we found to be about 30 feet in width , of good , pure water , though not as clear or transparent as we had ex pected. Coming from the plains we fully appreciated our camp Wood , principally pine and elm , in any quantity ; grazing superb , and water in abundance. Among the hills to-day we found hematite iron ore in great profusion. Dis tance traveled 17J miles. Direction southwest. CAMP .No. 1C , Sunday , _ July 19 , 10 A. jr. Commenced raining at 1 A. Jt , and , as there is every prospect of its continuing all day , we will not move until to-morro\v. This will give the animals a much needed rest , and enable the men to wash their clothes. 9 P. 31. It rained until 4 o'clock , M'as quite cool during the day ; built a lire at the entrance of my tent , and read the day through. CAMP No. 17 , Monday , July 20. Broke camp at 4:30 A. M , and , the train ha'ing cros.sed the river the preceding afternoon , we got olT in good shape , though the ground was rather heavy. Pushed up onto a high divide , thence down into a small valley running north and south , though heretofore they have all rim east and west. Moved through this valley in a southerly direction , crossing a deep ravine , in which we found some good water and watered our train ; thence through a piece ot scrub-oak timber , aver a succession of small hills cov- jred with grass , and across a deep ind well-wooded lavine , up over a uigh rolling country , and finally on to a divide , which wo followed for some miles , and from which we had in extended * view of the adjacent sountry. THE SIGHT WAS SUPEUH : \\'o could see away to the north , east ind west , as far as the eye could reach. To the north of us the Bad Lands , with their quaintly-shaped jlav and sandstone buttes , skirted ! > y the Belle Fourche River ; to the jast and west , a succession of hills overed with line grass , with here md there a valley slightly wooded with stunted pines and oaks ; while [ o the south , the Black Hills loomed jravely up , shutting out an exten- led view in that direction. The hills jeing our objective point , wo left the di\'ide , and then , turning south , ive took up our route through the Jills to our present camp on a dry fork of the Belle Fourche , but with plenty of water in its bed. The country passed over to-day is capa- ile of producing grass and grain iu ibundance , and we came across rt'ild cherries , black currants , and jooseberries. Distance marched 18 ] uiles. Direction southwest , CAMP No. IS , Tuesday , July 21. Broke camp at 4:30 : a. in. , and ihaped our course in a southeasterly llrection , through a'gap in the hills , trith the intention of making our ivay through the mountain-range , md , if possible , reacliing the park ivhich , rumor says , exists between : he two outside ranges of hills , and seeping our general direction as we nay , for our guides profess to be : itterly ignorant of this part of the sountry Custerpioneers us through iome Lad ravines , then over a suc : cession of high hills and along some devated ridges. We find most of he hills coveredi to within a few ranis of the top , with bunch-grass ; n the summit of nearly all of them , he sandstone in regular layers crops [ mt stark and bare , with here aud here a scraggly pine shooting up iut of the crevices. Some of the > eads of the ravines we cross are , illed with scrub oak and pine. Crossing a pretty little tributary if the > IlEDWATKK IHVKU , vljose course through the country ve can easily discern , owing to the rees which fringe its hanks , we [ inally enter " a fine valley about 8 niles broad "by 14 long , containing food grass , and having some good Imber among the hills which skirt t. Passing over and descending a ery high ridge , we come into our > rcsent camp in a dry fork of the ledwater , but with a splendid pring of very cold water running iqt of the sandstone ledges which rep qut along its hanks. Fuel is ilenty , grass good , and water in .bundance ; so we put up our tents , nd go to rest very well contented pith our march without the aid of ; uides. Passed a number of red andstone layers on the hills to-day. iQine gypsum 3nd a little limestone rere also found. Little game mot rith to-day. Direction southwest , Mstaucc traveled 14 } miles. CAJI p No. 20 , Friday July , 24. On a beautiful little stream , in an xqulsitfi little vallay , which we all "Floral " Valley" from the pro- jsionofwild flowers which com- letely cover the ground. We left lamp 19 at 5 a. m. , and moved due st over hill and dale , passing trough a beautiful little glen up a. rag hill into a burnt piece of pine roods , across them , and down % : arfully-steep hill into a little val- > y , in which was the dry bed of a ttle water-course. Thence up this alley , 5 or 6 miles to camp. As we ime up stream , it began to show igns of water , and pretty soon it 'as a beautiful , cool , clear Stream , 'boh | keeps growing larger and irger as wo ascend , antj the valley eeps growing prettier and prettier , 'bile the neighboring hills are cov- red with pine and aspen or poplar. The w th grass is good , and vegetation of all sorts is luxuriant. "We have had a hard day's work , but are more than satisfied. Distance traveled , 11A miles. CAMP JNo. 21. Saturday , ) July 25. ; Still on or near the headwaters of Floral Valley Creek. Moved at 4 } a. m. directly up the valleycrossing the creek which kept growing larger all the time no less than six times , as it seems to delight in me andering across the valley as often as possible. To-day'a march has been the pleasantestl have ever yet made. The whole valley is carpet ed with flowers. I have gathered 17 varieties within 25 square feet. And the views along the valley , as it first widened and then contracted and widened again , with the mur muring waters of the brook con stantly at our feet , has been exceed ingly pleasant and attractive , and especially so when looking back at some of the hot , dusty days alonj the Little Missouri Valley ami across theTPlains. About a mile be low our present camp , the stream suddenly stopped flowing , and upon seeking for the cause , we found tha WE HAD REACHED THE HEAD. Some six or eight beautiful springs bubbled up within a radius of 30 ( feet , forming at once a stream sufli cient to turn a millbut which twen ty miles farther down , entirely dis appeared by sinking into the sandy soil. Half a mile farther up we came to another spring , upon which we are now encamped. "Wood and water are in abundancebut the vast quantity of flowers crowds out the grasses , and the grazing is only fair. We have traveled almost south to-day , and made about 12 miles. CAMP K"o. 22 , Sunday , July 20. Broke camp at 4:45 : a. m. Trav eled up Floral Valley to the top of the range where it begins , passing through some of the most EXQUISITE BITS OP PAK SCENEKY I have ever teen little open glades , with clumps of pine , evergreen and aspen , on the low hills into which they ran , being constantly in sight. As we approached the head of the valley , the hills grew smaller and smaller , until they would not average more than 50 feet in height. Upon leaving the crest of the water shed down which ran the creek we had last encamped upon , wo found an old Indian trail , which we fol lowed up through a rocky defile , which , after after various windings , brought us into another valley , somewat larger than the one we had just left , with a fine stream of water running in just the diiection we wished , viz. : southeast , and In directly the opposite direction from the stream we had just left. This we followed down to our present camp , which Is a very beautiful one , with good water and splendid grass in abundance. Throughout this valley , as far as we have come , there are any quantity of springs , and we begin to find quartz mixed with the sandstone. Just after get ting into camp , our Indian scouts , .vhom we had sent on in advance , having met with signs of Indians , came hurrying back with the in formation that 'here was a SMALL VILLAGE OF SIOUX INDIANS encamped about 3 } miles on the stream below us. Taking the scouts and about 50 men with him , Gen. Ouster moved quietly down upon them , and , giving strict orders that tiey should not be harmed unless they showed fight , sent forward a white flag by one of the interpret ers , and , following it almost in stantly , succeeded in getting into their camp almost before they know Df our approach. The women and children were very muoU frightened it our Ree soquts , as the two nations ire always at war ; but they were joon reassured , and satisfied we did not intend to harm them. With a single exception , all of their men tvere out hunting , and he , "Slow- Bull , " a fine-looking and plucky savage , made the best of the situa tion. The hunters were called in , md finally One-Stab , the Chief , jame ajso. After a long talk , they xgreed to come up to our camp and itay with us , showing us the coun try , in return for certain supplies ivhich Gen. Custer ofleredj them. We then left them , and , later in the lay , Qne Stab and three of his war- iors came up after coffee and sugar. Pwo of the warriors soon made an sxcuse to go back , and One-Stab and i young warrior awaited the arrival > f the train with the supplies , Sus pecting from their Action that they night be PLAYING A DOUBLE GAME , General Custer ordered some of the [ ndian scouts to go with them to heir camp , and stay there as a sort > f guard until they came up the lext day ; also charging them note o let One-Stab and his warrior out > f their sight until they reached lie Indian camp. While they were ; oing quietly along , and within light of our camp , the young Sioux luddenly attempted to wrest the ; un of one of the scouts from him. n the struggle the gun was dis- iharged , wounding either the Sioux r his horse , and One-Stab and his -oung hiaumade olT at full speed , fallowed .by the guard. One-Stab vas recaptured and brought back , nt the young warrjor escaped , and , vhen our scouts rcaohed | the vil- agc , that too had departed , and , light having fallen , it was impossi- ile to pursue and overtake them , lie whole party consisted of five edges , six warriors , and twenty-one vonieii and children.
