The region known as the Black
Hills is situated in Western Dakota ,
with their western slopes stretching
into Wyoming Territory , their
southern extremity extending with
in fifty miles of the northwest corner
of Nebraska , and their northern
limits touching on Montana Terri
tory. While within the Black Hills
proper there is a vast extent of very
rich grazing and agricultural
lauds , abundance of timber and
water , to approach them from
anywhere in the .Eastern
States , the traveler muat pass
through a strip of country , varying
in width , ana generally destitute of
water and vegetation. Taking Har-
ney'a Peak , near which the richest
gold discoveries were made by Cus-
tar's miner's , as our objective point ,
and measuring the distance as
shown by the government maps ,
we are enabled to furnish the fol
lowing table of distances from im
portant frontier points :

of two dollars ; and from Brule City
to Hartley's Peak , 192 miles , his
raute liea along the level , grasay
valley of White Earth river.
The steamboat ride and -wagon
travel westward from Yankton , will ,
we doubt not , be enjoyed by all lov
ers of the beautiful in Nature and
even by the dullest and mostprosalc
of travelers. The Upper Missouri
River scenery has justly acquired
continental fame. From' Yankton
westward , the fast and elegant
steamers , run up the Missouri River
through a country of the moat pict
uresque , varied and romantic scen
ery , through woods , hilla and plaina
where the face of nature is tortured
into fantastic shapes as if to invite
the admiration of the sight-see'r.
From Fort Randall , on the Mis
souri River , Pratt & Ferris , post tra
ders , run a line of wagon trains to
Whetstone Agency , within fifty
miles of the Black Hills ; and to tra
velers who have no teams of their
own thia mode of conveyance ia the
safest , most expeditious and best.
