A Business Episode- ( Concluded. ) "But I will go , " she said ; and she hastily wrote a line , which was given to a servant , who took it to the lady's aunt , who was present at the ball. It was a curious sight to see a young gentleman and a lady all covered in a traveling cloak , with a gauze dress trimmed with lace occasionally peeping under cover , traveling that night in the express ; hut a wealth of artificial flowers thrown out of the car windows dews from time to time must have furnished unique discoveries for the agricultural people along the line of that road. In the cars for I had pen and ink a regular hill of sale of the diamonds was made out. At the 2sew York depot we arrived in time , sharp 12 o'clock , where the lady'3 husband received us , and a happy meeting it was. Punctual to a moment , was the triend of the house. He was an adept at dismounting diamonds , which he managed to do with a "which I have coar e jack-knife , carried , " he said , " twenty-live years. How am I to judge of their weight ? " he cried. Then he chuckled , counted the stones , breathed on them , rubbed them on tlie threadbare tlap of his coat , then arranged them in a circle on the top of his old black hat. Then he hem med and hawed over them , said one had a flaw , one was badly cut , declared that out of the sixty twenty-three were Brazilian stones and the rest Indian ; then he swept them into his dirty hand , wrapped each one'separately in pieces of thin paper taken from a copying boot , and kept me in a feverfor half an hour. ' 'I have fceen , " he said , "false stones in crown Jewels , and one cannot be too particular. They may bo worth , " here he paused , and was full ton minutes in his calcula tion * , " $00,000 outside. I had ap praised them higher In Mudame's neck the surroundings of r/j-Jn-e added to their charms. J/u fol , that Is a French Compliment. It i- , a bargain. Got a bill of sale ? Ah , all right , already signed ? Now young inti. * , retire in the closet and shut the door. " I did it , and through the key-hole I saw the blessed old follow take oil1 his cravat , unfold it , draw out a thick stiffening of notes ; pull oil a shoe and a stocking the left one it was and from thence oamo a wadding of money. I was recalled , ana the amount of money was put iu my hands. I took it , thinking of a certain Itoman Em peror and whence one of his reve nues came , when the dear old man , looking mo straight in the face di vining inv thoughts , said : "A'or olit ! " He was about going , and had picked up his constant friend , his baggy gingham umbrellathe laugh ing stock of the oillce , when I rush ed up to him and hugged him. He did not seemed surprised , but took it pleasantly. "That's a good cus tom aud belongs to my country. I am not conscious of having done anything particularly out of the way ? The transaction is a legiti mate one. If the money is not paid Iu sixty days I shall send the stones ttTHalphen , in Paris , who will give me certainly 25,000 francs profit on my purchase. " The money was just in time and wo were saved. That very next day I went to Lon- donand urged on the agents of the South American Government the payment of our claim. I suc ceeded but partially , but obtained enough money to release the pledge , and was bacjk anain in Isew York in less than forty days. The old. French gentleman canie yp smil ing , and the d.iamoiuls weTo re turned. He did even a gallant tiling , for he had the gems re mounted in an elegant style , and Ball & Black , for they were the jewelers in those days , said , ' 'that our old friend exhibited a lavishness as to ornamentation and a niggard * lincss as to price which was amaz ing. Tlie junior had his fortqiipliiit pairedvfor many ft ypan to come , but in.ad.u it up in time , but the -iual functions were left in abeyance. "My dear husbamrr" said the lady to me this spring she has grown matronly since then "goes to Flor ida , ostensibly for his health , every winter , but , would you believe it , he passes his time there ex * pioring Indian mounts for skele tons. He has suoh a strange idea that all Indians were at one time cannibals. His valise came home full of human bones , and he says , from their being all broken , that shows that the savages eal luim\n beings. I can't take an interest in that. I could in ruins. I never wear diamonds now , but when your daughter is married I promise her a pair of ear-rings two stones from a certain neck-lace. " Determined to Gee an Answer. ( From the Eoston bulletin. ) . A tnll , portly , dignified citizen of the Quaker persuasion , well-known in Philadelphia , arrived in New York the other day , and having no baggage but a light traveling'satch- el , was utterly oblivious to the ap- l > ealsof the hackmcn as he emerged from the railway station. "Fee thayaneo hotel ! Fifth ave- nee go Iu' ritup ! Fifth avenoo ? " Broadbrim stalked right on with out a woid. Another knight of the whip charged down upon him. ' Say Nicholas Hotel ! Say Nich olas Hotel coach ? This way for the S'.Nicholas ! " No response from the passenger , and not a muscle moved at this ap peal. Then there was a rush of half a dozen. "Kcrridge , sir , Uerridge ? Wanter ride up ? " "Winsur House ? Whose going up to the Winsur ? " "Astor House , sir ? " "Brecvort House ? Breevort ? " "Metripolitan Hotel ! " "llight down Broadway ! " "Ere you are , ker- ridcc , sir ? " The traveler loomed up like a tenpin - pin among vinegar-cruets , and with face us placid as a pan of milk , was calmly and silently moving away trom the crowd of jarvles , who looked after him with something like amazement , when a sudden thought seemed to strike one , who , running after him , seized hold of the handles of his traveling bag "Deaf and Dumb Asylum , &ir ? Going right up. " This was too much. Dignity re laxed into a laugh , and the driver got a face for a down town hotel. Fathers , Attention ! [ Mother at Ilome.J What ought , what can a mother do , when a good , pleasant , careless husband constantly thwarts all her efforts to teach or govern the chil dren , and yet cannot be made to see or feel what he is doing ? I < ct us illustrate and sketch from memory , not imagination : ' Mamma , please give me a piece of pie ? " "No , darling , one piece is enough. " ' 'Half a piece , please , marnm a ? " "No , Freddie , no more. " "A very little piece , mamma , dear ? " "No , Freddie , no. " "Do give the child n little piece ; I'll risk its hurting him. " And the mother gave it "Mamma , may I go out and play ? " ' It's very chilly , and you have a cold : I don't think it is best , " "Bundle me up warm , mamma , an-i 1 won't take cold. " "I fear you will , you must play in doors to-day. " "Just a little while , please , mam ma ? " "Xo , Freddie , you must not go out to-day. " s "Do let the child go out. ( What a girl you are making of him. , Wo men never were fitted to bring up boys. Dress him up warm and let him run ; it will do him good. " And Freddie went out. "May I have my blocks in the parlor , mamma ? " "Xo , Willie , make your block house in the dining room. Miss L. is an invalid , and I want the parlor very quiet. " T "I'll be very quiet. " "You will intend to be , but 3ou cannot help making some uoieand as Miss L. very rarely goes any where , I fear she will be very tired at best ; so be a very good little boy , and play in the dining-room this afternoon. " "I won't make a bit of noise nor tire her one speck. " , "You must play in the dining- room- , Willie , and not say any more about it. " "Nonsense ; it will do her good to see a happy face ; it will giye her something besides her own pains and aches to think of. Let him bring his blocks in the parlor. " And he brought them in. "What a torment that boy has got to be ! It's tcaze , teaze , tea/e from morning till night. It's enough to Avear the patience out of Job ! If you don't whip him 1 will. " And he whipped him. Query Who ought to bo whip ped V" He looked Guilty. ( Columb a , S , O ) Correspondence Cincinnati Commercial. ) A lawyer from Chester , a 'heavy negro comity , gives me many inci dents illiHtrating the African's ju dicial capacity. Not long since a negro oilemlcr was brought before a negro Trial Justice. The prisoner's ollence was , in fact , no offence at all , and it was only out of maluce that he was arrested. A white man a most respectable farmer had given him some cotton seed , and he had taken it without a thought but what the title was good. But an other negro claimed the cotton seed , and had darkey No. 1 arrested for stealing. The Trial Justice heard the testimony , and sentenced the poor negro to ten days imprison ment and S-0 line , although there was not a particle of testimony up on which he could reasonably base a conviction. It happened that the Circuit court was in session , and the Justice was informed that an innocent man was in jail. He had the Justice before him in court and inquired for the testimony , which the law declares shall be reduced to writing. "I hain't got any , " said the black Justice. "I don't do no writing in my court ; I keeps it all in my head. " "What testimony 'tliti you have against this man ? " demanded the Judg ? . He could not give any. "Then why did you convict him , " the Judge asked. | " 'Cause , sah t noticed him close , and he looked guilty. " "You convicted him , then ) on his looks. , and not on the evidence " "Yes sah he looked ' , , SiiMi'i SQ I found him , guilty. " Tl\o \ black judicial officer was thereupon given some wholesome advice as to how to conduct his "Court , " and departed vith a bow and a "Yes , sah. " TI1K COMING STIIUGGLE.
