FOREST CULTURE.
A Great Uursery to be Established
Hear Omaha.
TIITON- . CEDAR COUNTY. IOWA ,
August 8th , 1874.
Tathe Publisher of the Omaha Bee :
I have been for the last twenty-
five years engaged in experimenting
in the culture of forest and timber
trees at Oxford , in Jones county ,
Iowa. My experiments have em
braced every variety of forest trees
that flourish and grow between the
fortieth and forty-second degrees of
latitude. I have made the thing a
success , as the many beautiful
groves scattered through the coun
ties of Cedar , Jones , Jackbon and
Clinton , in the State of Iowa , will
bear witness. These groves havt
mostly or all been planted by me
or parties who have purchased
plants of me , and set them out and
cultivated them under my instruc
tion. These groves excite the ad
miration o'f every one who travels
through this section of country.
They are the pride and glory ot
almost every homestead of the
country. It has been my study and
the business or my life for the past
twenty-five years to make myself
acquainted with Uie relative value ]
of each kind of tree , and the best
method of raising the same , and
iiaviug beeu satisfied for years past
that your State aifords a great tield
for my enterprise.
I am making arrangements to es
tablish a nursery of a great many
millions of young plants some
where in your vicinity , so that I
may be able to supply the people of
Nebraska with such plants as will ,
with proper care , grow into a thing
of beauty and value.
I .shall be in your city within
hree or four weeks from this date ,
when I will call on you.

A VOICE FROM SALINE.
Gen. Vifquain Makes a Proposi
tion.
Are There a Thousand Farmers
Who Will Give 100 Bushels of
Wheat Each , in Belief of
the Destitute 1
CRETE , NEB. , Aug. 4th , 1874.
I have read your articles relating
to the destruction in our State , on
account of drouth and grasshoppers.
I agree with you in some points and
in others I differ.
I hold , sir , that when a common
enemy is doing us mischief , that it
is our duty , as men , to stand by one
another ; and I further hold , that as
citizens of Nebraska , it should be
our point of honor , to find" in our
very midst the necessary means to
relieve the destitute. Thence , I
make a proposition , that I will be
one of a thousand farmers , who will
give his share of one hundred thou
sand bushels of wheat for the de
vastated districts.
I have been , myself , sorely tried
by the little plagues , and by destroy
ing a magnificent corn crop for me ,
they have prevented me from re
suming specie payments this very
fall. I shall go for the hoppers with
a vengeance next year , by putting
more corn and wheat in the ground
than I ever did before.
A mass meeting should be called
at Lincoln at the earliest possible
day , in order to show the neighbor
ing States how great a heart Ne
braska has.
Our destitute districts should not
be left desolate. Yours ,
VlCTOK VlFQUAIN.
GRANGE POINTS.
There are 52 Granges of P. of
H. in Colorado.
The Grangers are taking steps
for the establishment of a paper mill
iu Los Angeles , Cal.
The latest footing up of the Pa
trons of Hu-jbandry- North Caro-
lida shows a total of 420 Granges.
Past Masters of County Coun
cils , Deputies , and officers of the
State Grange , are qualified * .o install
the officers of the new county
granges.
The Iowa State Grange has
finally printed her organ , which is
edited by the Secretary of the State
Grange. It is called "The Patron's
Helper , " and will contain all the
official instructions. "
According to the National
Grange of Patrons of Husbandry ,
there are at present about twenty
thousand Granges in the country ,
this will make the totnl member
ship nearly a million.
He who feayeth that the Grange
organization is for political purposes
Joes not tell the truth. It is a mis
take. The Independent or third
party movement is wholly discon
nected with the Grange Order. )
Nemaha Granger.
The Grangers at West Point ,
Neb. , have an elevator , and they
propose to establish at that place an
igricultural manufactory. The
ungine is ordered , and will be so
placed as to run the elevator and
the manufactory.
The Grangers of Shiawassee ,
Clinton , and Ingham counties ,
Michigan , will hold a grand picnic '
it Pine Lake , August 20. The Hon.
5 F Brown , Master of the Slate
3range , and J W Childs , will ad-
Iress the Order , It is expected to
je the larpest gathering of the Or- :
ler ever held in Central Michigan )
The Patrons of Lyons , Burt
ounty , have decided to hold a pic
nic September 2d , and extend an in-
i-itation to all the Granges in the
Bounty , and other societies to meei '
it the Grange Hall , at 9 o'clock , p.
BI. , where the procession will form
ind proceed to the grove. Speakers
jf prominence are expected from
broad. The Tekamah band will
Furnish music , and a social and fra
ternal season of enjoyment is ex
pected.
Many Patrons are advocating the Li
onsolidation of weak granges in a
neighborhood , on the ground thai
ivhere membership is limited , and
lie attendance not always full , a
"eeliug of despondency is too liable
o arise among tlie members. It is fo
irgued that a large grange has more fofll
ifeand mutual encouragement than fllc
small on. There would seem to c
e much truth in this , and if it can b <
c done , consolidation would do 4b
nuch good , besides saving useless 4bl
xpenses. This should be discussed bl
n the subordinate granges.
