The building was occupied by a
family , whose name we could no
ascertain , and was owned by two
orphans named Jefferson.
About ten o'clock Thursday
evening a juvenile till-tnpper crept
into Ish's Ninth street drug store
and had succeeded in pulling out
the soda fountain * money drawer
about half wayand was in the act
of gobbling the contents , when he
was discovered by Mr. Mike Parr ,
who gave him a livelychase. The
boy , ho.vcver , got away.
J. A.Thorup , theshirtmanufac-
turcr , has "busted" and gone east.
He closed up Friday night , and next
morning when his sewing girls
came to work they found the door
locket ! . It appears that John Eatli
held u judgment of about $300
against him. We understand that
all debts will be paid , especially
the wages due the hands.
Julius 'Meyer , of the "Indian
"XVigwarn , " has had some very ele-
gautadvertising- , cards gojteu up for
him. * The photographs of himself in
Indian costume , and of the High
School building and Grand Central
Hotel wcre taken by Currier. He
intends to have these cards framed
and distributed all over this country
and Europe to advertise his business
and Omaha.

THE INDEPENDENT MOVE
MENT.
A Grand Fizzle !
A convention of "what-is-its"
was held at the Court House Sat-
urdayatternoon to elect delegates to a
State Convention for the purpose of
organizing a thinlor Independent
party.
There were about fifteen persons
present , including the reporters of
the morning papers. Among the
"notables" were Harrison Johnson ,
and Allen Root. The laboring men
and mechanics were conspicuous
for their absence , and the Republi
cans were represented by only two
members of that party. Mr. Root
was elected president and -
Cutter secretary.
Mr. Root made an eloquent speech
against the grinding monopolies ,
and truusted that this convention
was but the index of the ground
sweL. His remarks were enthusi
astically cheered by the mob with a
marked silence ,
A number of long-winded resolu
tions , ready made for the occasion )
were read and adopted. On account
of the transparent thinness of the
congregation , no delegates were
elected to the State Convention.
The meeting adjourned till nexl
Saturday , in order to give time to
up recruits.

WERE THEY MARRIED ?
How a Hotel Bunner Fat up a
Job on an Verdant Iowa
Couple.
A practical joke was played by a
Ninth street hotel runner upon a
verdant Iowa couple , who recently
came over the river to be married in
Omaha. The runner first noticed
the loving pahon the transfer train ,
and learning from their actions and
from some rf-marks which he over
heard , he concluded they were on
matrimony bent. He accordingly
determined to catch them for hi *
hotel , and have the marriage cere
mony performed there. He intro
duced himself , and asked them ii
they were going to stop in Omaha ,
and upon their answering that they
werehe advised them to"putup"a1
thehouse he represented , which he
could recommend very highly , as
he boarded there himself.
"Well , " said the young man"wt
want to get married , and if we can
get a preacher to do the job then
we'll stop at that house. "
"Oh , that's easy enough done ,
I am well acquainted with a min
ister , whom I'll go and see abou !
the matter. "
That settled it. They went to the
house , had a square meal , and tool
a stroll and a street car ride around
the city. They rptqnjecj for supper ,
and about seven o'clock , they senl
for the friend the runner whom

him if he had procured the

being played upon them.
The runner then goes out and ob
taining a blank marriage certificate
and a license , fills out the latter
and in a short time returns with i

merly been a justice of the peace
Ho bad been informed of the rolt
he was to play , and had acoordlng'
ly donned a seedy black suit and i
white cravat for the occasion. He
was ushered into the presence of the

The marriage ceremony was performed -
formed by the "minister" in the
presence of several witnesses , all o
whom were cognizant of the joke

tomed liberty of kisaing the bride
and adding a blessing upon the
newly married pair of long life anc
happiness. The minister ther
withdrew , after being rew-ardei
with a ten dollar greenback.
The runner and his "pal" met af
terwards and divided the spoils

sleep , the bridegroom sent for the

The next day the happy couple
returned to their home near Glen-
wood , evidently having enjoyed
their weelJing trip , and withoul

dled in more ways than one.
The question now arises are they
married ? But what's the odds as
