Orders ad < at ouj THE ERA OF FLOODS. Pittsburg and Alleghecy City Deluged. A Larse Knmber of Buildings Swept Away and'Over 200 Lives Lost. { Telegraphic Coiresprndecce of th New York Tribune. ) k > -On Sunduj- evening Pittsburgand Alleghany City were visited by a terrible calamity in the shape of a food. The prevailing theory is that .the cause of the disaster was the bursting of a water-spout , though other opinions are held. The water -descended in vast torrents , and in the twinkling-of an eye the streets were flooded. Hundreds of houses were sweijtaway. and the loss of life is stated at between 100 and 00 , ! 'though no accurate figures can yet be obtain ed. A rough estimate puts the pecuniary loss at $3,000,000. Never in the history of Pittshurg was'there ever anything so * terrible aa the incidents of the flood of Sun day night Mo re than 200 lives were " lost and $3,000,000 of property "was destroyed by the bursting of the water pquLover the city. Not un til' to dayjdid , the public realize what an awful destruction of life and pro perty had occurred. This was probably - - bablyoy \ ingi to the fact that the storm continued all night in a mod ified form , and two reporters- who first ventured into Alleghany City came near being drowned in the bursted"se\yers JBul to-day , when 'the dull , dreary morning broke through'a drizzling rain , a great cry of horror ran . through the jister cities. . As early as tix o'clock ft was said that not lesslhari four hundred people had lost their lives at Butch- era Itun , Spring Garden avenue , Madison avenue , Wood's Run and Saw Mill Hun , representing nearly the cardinal points of the compass of the two cities.l By 7 o'clock the streets of both titles were filled with people rushing toward the various scenes of disaster. A del-cription of the appaling storm or water-spout , whichever it may be called , should not be out of the way , although it would be im possible to draw even a faint pic ture of the awful original. About 6 } a'clock on Sunday evening , two ? reat black clouds came upfroftTop- posite points of the compass , one to the south-west and one to the nbrth- ; ast. They rose slowly , like two aw- ul demons. Their edges wereragged md black , flecked here and-tbcrc vith patches of .fiery colors. Adozen ittle promontories jotted out here md there , like the heads of hydiaT ipon each , changing shape and ap-H Hjarance every moment , assuming he appearance of bird , or beast , or nonster ; occassionally extending- ar up across the intervening space ,3 though to reconnolter the enemy , , nd then again receding. But all hjs time the two great giants watted r in inky blackness , nd almost without outline , slowly pproached. each other. Suddenly noise between ajoar ; and a g'rowl ur&t from each. There was no did- , c inct detonation like ordinary thun- er , but a low , terrible"and contiii- ous rumbling growl , causing the ir to vibrate and the very founda- ons of the earth to shake as though terian ague had seized upon the verlasting hills. A fringe of lire ke the aurora borealis began to run long the ragged edges , /aint at rsf , but growing in inteusjty every loinenl , until It looked as though ' le two demons had put on an ar- w mrof flre. On they came , nearer wcl id nearer , when suddenly a cltl lighty bolt of blinding light leaped tlai oni the central head of the demon aitc ' burred - In tcC the northeast , high-up C ( 10 sky , and then fairly struck the si jposlng demon. A momen'tand a sih jafening crash divided the hot at- sieJ losphere > > < ! uiuao the earth eJ emble palpably. But the demon ' the southwest was not even untied , but paid back his assailant Ith a forked Javen } | of sulphurus ime. This was the opening of the grand ittle. ' The long lines of flames iat enveloped the combatants ased to dance and flicker , and like ic borealis gathered into tongues" Silver and blue fire , and leaped nvard simultaneously from both rectlons until the rapidly narrow- g space between them seemed to i anocean , of Are. The two imon clouds met directly over the ty , and seemed to rock the earth its uttermost foundations. Fvora iv minutes previous a few heavy ops of rain had been pattering wn , bnt-when the two giants met their death embrace It seemed-as ough a river had been unchained -the heavens , and was falling dily to the earth below. For half houritdid not rain. There were distinguishable drops as the term generally understood.
