The Unfortunate Consequence of Imputing Dishonesty to a Member of First-Class So ciety who Plays Draw Poker with Five Aces. I From the New York Fvenlng Post. | The leading papers of the South west contain standing advertise ments descriptive of the delights which await the traveler in search of health and pleasure at tlie Hot Springs of Arkansas. After care fully enumerating the maladies for which their healing waters are ben eficial , the advertisement describes in glowing terms the beauties of na ture , the magnificent fccenery , the excellent hunting and fishing , aud winds up by assuring the public that the hotel offers "all the com forts and elegances of a refined home combined with first-class so ciety. " If the recent report that our worthy Vice-President , Mr. Wilson , is about to visit the Arkansas - j sas Springs and mingle with this society has any foundation , Senator Carpenter , of Wisconsin , who is the acting President of the Senate of the United States , may well expect a permanent promotion. Ephraim Taggart , in an evil mo ment , as we will see later , fell in with a paper containing an account of this "pays de Cocagne. " He had been for many years A MARTYR TO ACUTK RHEUMATISM. This malady , according to the le gend , could not exist for a moment when brought into contact with the waters of these wonderful springs. Mr. Taggart had lived a solitary life on his plantation upon tiie banks of the bhiggish Hoiuochitto , in the State of Mississippi , entirely de prived not only of "firot-claas so ciety , " but society of every kind. The appeal to him was direct and irresistible. He packed his trunk and started for Arkansas , in search of health and "tlie comforts and ele gance of a refined home. " At the springs Ephraim Taggart made the acquaintance of Colonel Charles Gordon , of Gai.ve.ston , : Texas , a pleasant gentleman of winning" manners , as Mr. Tag gart found out only too late. As is the habit in "first-class society" at hot springs all the world over , tho. e votaries of fashion killed many a dull hour with cards. One fine Thursday afternoon tlie Colonel proposed a quiet game of "poker" to the gentleman from Mississippi. On this eventful occasion Mr. Taggart was pursued with the most astonish ing ill luck. Js o matter how strong bis hand , Gordon's was always stronger. Taggart , after losing all Liis money , put up his watch against two hundred dollars of his own 0101103 % which had been won by the Colonel , and called his adversary on i pair of aces. CJordon's luolc did not desert him. ' HE EXHIBITED THREE ACES , A.nd pocketed the watch. There ivere , it seems , "five other gentle o men" in the room. Taggart jumped up from his chajr , accused the Col onel of cheating , and Demanded his money and his watch. Tne Colonel ivas fully equal to the emergency , md replied "with great dignity of nanner , " so the account says : 'There can be no such thing as iheating among gentlemen , sir ; but he cards have been running very vildly. " Ihe unreasonable Tag- fart thereupon refused to be com- brted , became very violent , forgot 'or the ir.o nentall usages of "firstj slass society , " and , shaking his fist n the Colonel's face , shouted out , 'You blackleg , if you don't settle vith me right here I'll . " But 10 never finished the prase ; for Col- > nel Gordon , with a step backward , Ircw out his knife , and deftly iheathcd it into Mr. Ephriam Tag- jart's body to the extent of about six inches- with the remark , "I eckon that will settle you. " The Uolonel was entirely correct in his eckoning. EPHRIAM TAGGART FELL ; DEAD Co the flcor , when Gordon , quietly emoving his knife from its tempo- ary sheath , wiped the blood from he blade with a red sash ho wore ound his waist , " and , brandishing t in the ai- , turned to the five as- onisbcd spectators of the lively scene and pleasantly asked "if any jentleman had anything to say ibout it ? " Notwithstanding this jolite invitation to speak , nobody ieemed disposed to continue the onversation , jjvhich dropped then md there , whereupon the gallant Colonel withd-ew. Of Mr. Ephriam raggart we hear nothing more , ex- ept that ho was 'decently planted , ' 0 use the expressive imagery of that jountry , in a neighboring church- * ard. Poor fellow ! "first-class so- : iety" proved to him a more deadly be than acute rheumatism. The event , however , was too jrave to pass unnoticed , even at the 3ot Springs of Arkansas. The next S lay a meeting of the mutual friends f the two gentlemen was held at he hotel , Gordon being present , we ire told , dressed in O "red sash , a wnibrero hat , and a heavy pair of Mexican silver spurs , " which 'made a clinking noise as he strode n the room. " The weapon which 'caused the death'r of tlie unfortun- ite Ephraim Taggart was in his > elt. The expression "caused the leath" is delicate and happy. The liscussion was varied and aniuia- ed. After some talk Colonel Gor- lon was called upon to "explain 10.v the difficulty arose , " which he lid in a manner entirely satisfac- ory to himself. It seems , he said , hat the trouble was "PURELY ACCIDENTAL , " Vntl came from "playing with a > ack of cards containing five aces. " Mr. Taggart hud un.ustly charged lim with cheating because of his laving three aces. Now there was lothing on which to base the ac- lusation. He might even have lad four aces. It was possible , vithout any cheating on his part. He had the same grounds for charg- ng Taggart with unfair dealing , > ut he had refrained from so doing. > Vho could say which particular ace brmed the fifth ace ? Colonel Gor- Ion "deeply regretted the unfortun- ite occurrence , " but "under the cir- sustances , and as a gentleman , " he 'had no other course to pursue. " ATe hear nothing of the five specta- ors. The meeting , however , "cen- ured" Colonel Gordon for "having > een hasty In defending his honor. " To those'of our readers who com- > lain of the dull routine of pleasure , he quiet sameness and melancholy f life at Saratoga and Newport , we ecommend a trip to the hot spr.ngs if Arkansas. There they will find ife , movement and excitement , 'ombined with the ' 'comforts and degancies of n refined home. " But hould they meet Colonel Charles jJordon of Galveston , Texas ( he vill be easily recognized by his red A ash , sombres hat and clinking pure ) , they will no doubt give him 1 very wide berth. Arkansas is a jrcat state ; It has an abundance of lot springs , high mountains , big jvers and packs of cards with five aces , aud finally , one Government not being enough it had two. One- half of the population came very near exterminating the other half to determine who really was the right ful Governmor ; and had it not been for the United States authorities , blood would have flowed there like the water of the hot springs. Adventures oi a Door-plate. [ Portland ( Me. ) Argus/ ] About twenty-five years ago a gay damsel of this city was united in hj'menial bonds , and judging that a door-plate would be a good thing to have in the family , con tracted for the same with a well known jewelry firm. The plate was finished in good style , when , behold , the name was not frpelled correctly. Like Mrs. Toodles's Thomson with out the p , it would not do nt all. The dealers had it on their hands , much to their disgust. By aud by along came a baby "a beautiful boy" and as years rolled by he rolled up strength , till at last , like his folks before him , he went , "and the twain were or.e. " Then he wanted to be signalized just like his mother ; he wanted a sign to his frontdoor. The jeweler still lived , and so did the plate ! What would not suit the mother pleased the less particular tastes of tbe son. The sign was found and bought. Twen ty-five years after the error is con sideied of slight account and the plate invites the friends of the lad to his hospitable rooms , and the mother , as'she passes the faulty sign , imagines that if she could step back twenty-five years , she would not be so particular about the spel ling , whether it was an for an e. The Coming : Man. He poked out the off eye , so the animal couldn't see fron that side , and al together he was enjoying himself immensely in his own innocent \vay. Unfortunately Johnny's mother happened along while the zircus was in operation , and she put in end to the performance. Taking tier son upon her knee ( not face lown , for she does not believe in corporal punishment ) she , proceed F ed to show Johnny tue error of his tvays by lecturing him thuswise : 'My darling , you should not torture he poor Jittlc. animals in the man- ler you were doing ; God made hem and they are under his charge , [ f 3-011 hurt them God will be angry vith my pet , and then mother will ) e sorry. God loves all the little" iVhen the harangue had reached his point the youth threw his little trms around his mother's neck and vhispered , "Cheese it , lieesc it. " Gazing at the Comet.
