No programme was received. Judgingfrom theslimnessof the church notices In Saturday'sBEE,our readers may conclude that the ma jority of our gospel spreaders were taking in the circus; if not, then the menagerie, at least. The key-hole reporter of the Bee obtained a full report of the proceedings of the regular weeekly meeting of the "Co-ops" Friday night, but it is unavoidably crowded of to-day's issue. It will do to keep, however, and it can be safely with- f held from publication until to-mor- row, as the Bee is tho organ of the "Co-ops." The Saratoga School pic-nic at Sulphur Springs Friday was a pleasant success. The girls amused themselves with swings, and ore quet and other pastimes, while the I boys indulged in baso ball. Queen'! Circus. The street procession Saturday of Montgomery Queen's great cir cus, menagerie and hippodrome, at tracted a great deal of attention, and filled the principal streets with an interested throng of spectators. It Avas n long line indeed, and pre sented a handsome appearance, proving beyond a doubt that it is one of the most extensive institu tions of the kind that have ever visited Omaha. The first performance began at two o'clock. The vast tent was ciowded to its utmost capacity, and the immense audience enjoyed the really first -class entertainment. Little Mollis Brown, thechampion equestrienne of the world, aston ished everybody by her daring feats; Leopold and Geraldine, the gymnasia, were excellent; Jean nettc Elllur, the tight rope walker, was considered by all as a daring performer; Madame Tournair, as the most skillful horsewoman in the world; Frank Barry, equestrian, Thomas Clifford, acrobat, and the Beimont brothers, gymnasts, were excellent in their specialties. Lekqe A Co., junelOtS 192 Farnham t HIS TRAV- How a Professional Sharper Seat an Omaha Merchant. Se is Soon Afterwards Caught By the Telegraph- In 18G4, a rather good looking, well dressed young man, arrived at the Osborn House, Rochester, N. Y., of which Mr. George Thrall, now of the Grand Central Hotel, Omaha, was then the proprietor. This young man registered as "J. H. Thompson, New York." He was alloweu to run up a little bill there, and permitted to obtain a small sum of money from the hotel, under a false representation. He.es caped arrest, and jumped the city. In J873, while proprietor of the Battle House, Mobile, Mr. Thrall noticed the registry of "J. H. Tom linson, New Orleans." Recogniz ing the hand-writing, and the same initials upon his register about nine years before at Rochester, the clerks were at oncenotifiedto watch Tom linson, and not to let him run up a larger bill than his baggage would secure, and not to permit hha to get it out of the house by piece-meal. He was on that day out driving on Wthe Shell road, and when he re turned, it was just in time to tflke the train, so h.paid his bill and got away without being'recognlzed. A rew months later, Mr. Thrall was sitting on the front galiery of the Battle House, when a well dressed man, of the sane general desorip tlon of J. H. Thompson, except about forty pounds heavier, presen ted himself and introduced himself, remarking that he had been an oc casional guest at the Osburn, at Rochester. He presented a busi ness card upon which his name ap peared;, as a member p,f a. firm in New Orleans. Soon after that Mr. Thrall met Tomlinson on Canal street, New Orleans, but as he was not seen, and not caring to be rec ognized by birn.i was allowed to pass on. Mr. Thrall was too busy to in vestigate whether such a firm as the one Tomlinson had represented himself to be connected with, had any existence. Tomlinson next turns up in Omaha, a few days ago, and asKs familiarly for Mr. Thrall, at the office of the Grand Central. The city editor of the Uee, hap pening in about that time, was in formed that "Harry Tomlinson, of New York, seemed to be an old friend of Mr. Thrall," etc. A little personal item appeared in the BpE tbe same evening to the effect that Mr. Harry Tomlinson, a friend of Mr. Thrall, was in tho oity on a visit, and was stopping at the Grand Central Hotel. A morning paper, not lacking in enterprise, repub lished the item. Mr. Thrall inquired into the matter, and found that Tomlinson had not bepn ji8trunieu tal in publishing it, and as it had all occurred by mistake, he did not deny the friendship through the press, not deeming it of any im portance, believing, however, that Tornjinson had reformed, and that he was representing a business firm in tho East, as his cards set forth. Under this impression, Tomlinson was spared the mortification of ox posure, and was allowed to rest un der the hallucination that he was not identified as Thompson. Tom linson, while here, introduced hr9of q several army ofn oers, professing to Jiayp been connected with the First Infan try. Among others he approached General King with the statement, to which General King coolly re plied that he himself had been con nected with that regiment twenty one years, and that ho had no knowledge of such an officer. Tom linson was not at all disconcerted by the rebuff, but changed the sub ject. Tomlinson had by this time post ed himself sufficiently well to carry out one of his swindling transac tions, by -which he gains a liveli hood. His plan was executed as follows : Captain H. W. Cremer, of the china and glassware house of J., T. Griffin & Co., had received a postal card, purporting to be from the Mu tual Glass Company, of Pittsburgh, stating that Mr. Tomlinson, their agent, would arrive about June 20th, when ho would be glad to re ceive their fall order for goods, &c, Ac. This card was without much doubt sent by Tomlinson himself. Upon the strength of this.card, and also upon Torallnson's relationship with a well-known old citizen, to gether with his acquaintance with Mr. Thrall and several officersliere, Captain Cremer endorsed, hhi draft on the Mutual Glass Company for S200. lomlmson at once had the draft cashed, pocketed the money, paid his hotel bill, and left for the West. Almost immediately after bis de parture. Captain Cremer received another postal card, as follows : "If J. H. Tomlinson should call on ou, representing himself as our agent! have nothing'to dowltlihim. He is not in our employ, aud is a swindler. Yours respectfully, Mutual- Glass Co. Pittsburg, June 17". This postal card was In every sense of the word an eye-opener to Capt. Cremer, who at once called upon Mr. Thrall to find out what he knew of Tomlinson. Learning his char acter and whereabout irom Mr, Thrall, he swore out a warrant for his arrest, and had Sheriff Burley telegraph the Sheriff of Uintah County, Wyoming Tf"110' to rest him. Hearing nothing from the Sheriff, the following dispatch was sent to a prominent citizen of FortBridger, Wyoming Territory, by Mr. Thrall at the request of Capt Cremer: SWINDLER ON ELS. "SheriffBurley has warrant for J. H. Tomlinson, swindler; six feet, dark complexion, moustache, broad forehead, guest of Lieut . Is he there ? Can you cause bis deten tion for requisition? Geq.Thba.ll, The following reply was received Friday : "Tomlinson is here. Expects to remain until Sunday. Will endeav or to detain him until requisition ar rives. " Tnus the case stands. Tomlinson will be brought back to Omaha to give an account of himself, and square up with Capt. Cremer.
