On Tuesday, Mr.Charles Greniug,
made complaint before Justice Hale,
against Charles More, a former em
ploye of Swocsy Cuthbertson,
charging him with forgery. It ap
pears that More drew a check of $20
on the State bank, and signing the
name of Sweesy &. Cuthbertson to

oheek was dated, yesterday, but the
forgery ,ho wevor, was disooveredsoon
after Grening had got possession of
the check. Yesterday the much

Every attempt to build up the
manufacturing industries of Omaha
deserves encouragement We are
gratified to learn that Mr. P. J.
Quailey, ono of our old citizens, has
established a soap factory which
soon promises to rival the older es
tablishments in this city. Mr.
Quailey begins on a small scale, but
he has the ability and determina
tion to produce firat-class goods at
reasonable prjpes. He proiwscs to
furnish our dculora an article that
will net only compete with home
and foreign productions, but can
fairly lay claim to superiority and
cheapness.
Mr. Quailoy has located his fac
tory near the powder house, ia the
building purchased by him from
Theodore uisher. He has every
facility for manufacturing and pack
ing. We bespeak for him the lib
eral patronage of our citizens.

Benson ii Foiled in an Attempt to 3(tt
His Family ont or all their Property.
Complaint was yesterday morning
made at the Police Court against
John Benson, who has been keep
ing a saloon for some time past at
the corner of Sixth and Pacific
streets. It apjwars that he has been
abusing his family shamefully for
the past ten d.iys, and had finally
made up his mind to gather all the
money possible and then desert
them. He had saved up about
$1,800, which he had deposited in
the FLt Xt.ti mal ilanK, ana was
dally increasing this sum bj selling
off his property and his family
household furniture. His wife and
daughter appeared against him at
Court, and ho finally comprom
ised the matter by giving his wife
SSO0 and the household furniture.
The complaint was thereupon with
drawn upon his paying the costs.

It reminded ono quite forcibly of
the old Bible times, when the early
Christians were persecuted and
driven from one place to another, to
see the lonely band who so stealthi
ly wended their way to the little
creek in Gise's addition Saturday
night, to administer the rite of bap
tism. It was after eight o'clock in
the evening, and the quiet of Na
ture was broken only by the piping
of the frogs, who were disturbed at
the unwonted scene. The pale
moon in the heavens above lent her
light for the self-ordained priest of
Joseph Smith's persuasion to read
his chapter and sing his hymn, and
then, with the assistance of two
other devotees, the waiting disciple
was plunged in true orthodox style.
It was useless for him to flinch as
he seemed likely to do, for the three
were too raanv for him, and under
he went, just once, but they held
him tilt well soaked; then they
drew him out with his mouth full
of the muddy water from the hole
which nad not had time to settle
since the assistants' spades had
scooped it out to enlarge it Then
with sonorous voice th self-made
priest pronounced a blessing upon
the convert, whose name was none
other than Joseph, (whetherSmith,
too, or not, Is not known,) and the
little band dispersed, walking into
the city, leaving the disciple's
clothes to dry in the evening air;
possibly his faith kept him warm,
who knows ?

Postal Notes.
When the law, ordering that no
oltyunder30,000 inhabitants should
have the free delivery system, it
was feared that Omaha being below
the required standard, would have
this great convenience taken away
from it. But our citizens need have
no fears on this account, as the In
terpretation of the law is, that those
cities below 30,000, now having the
free delivery system, shall not be
deprived of it The law applies only
to the future establishment of the
system in cities which have not yet
got it.
Omaha in the distribution of mail
mattor by the free delivery system
stands above thlrty-ono other cities,
among which are St. Joe, Des
Moines, Burlington, Wheeling, Sa
vannah, Dubuque, Charleston, Da-
f venport, Poughkeepsie, Leaven
worth, and Mobile. In the month
of April there were delivered in
Omaha, by six carriers, 41,251 mail
letters; 4,619 drop letters; 20,500 pa

28,430 letters.
