A small steam screw propeller, 20x
4 feet, with a capacity of ten miles
per hour, is located here for excur
sion parties. Mr. Wm. Ivory has a
beautiful garden, museum, etc.,
upon the adjoining premises.
We will now proceed to enume
rate the many extensive manufac
turies at this place, with such re
ferences a3 our space will permit.
THE NORTH STAR WOOLEN MILLS,
located in a four-story stone struc
ture, turns out some of the finest
blankets and other goods, in the
country. Toe mills are the pro-
perry or Jdessre. Uibson. and Tyler;
they employ 130 hands, two-thirds
of whom are females. This enter
prising firm manufacture upwards
of 600,000 pounds of goods annually.
We next visited
GOVERNOR WASIIBURXE'S
grist mill, the largest one in
America. The buildiwr is of solid
stone,
100xl3S feet, and 90 feet
hitrh. This mill nlone would fur
nish material enough to rill several"
columns, if properly described in all
itsdetaiN. It turns out 1,000 barrels
of flour per daj', and is run by water,
from a forty foot head. It is provi
ded with furtj run of stones, and
gives employment to 40 millers, and
120 cootierh.
Among other extensive grist
mills here, are Pillsburg & Co's Em
pire Mill, which turn out 500 bar
rels per day; and Eastman & Gib
son's, COO barrels daily. There are
altogether 18 grist mills in this city,
which have a combined capacity of
over 7,000 barrels ierday. The total
amount turned out in one year, ex
ceeds 600,000 barrels, or about three
and one-half million pounds.
But the
LUMBER INTERESTS,
of all others, are the great wonders
of Minneapolis. This city alone man
ufactures upwards of 100,000,000 feet
of lumber, 40,000,000 shingles, and
10,000,000 laths each year. Yet tue
unlimited power which the im
mense falls of St. Anthony furnish
is sutllcieiit to run the combined
works of England. It would be
vain t endeavor a description of
any one of these extensive mills,
much less all of them. I will briefly
auuue loa lew visited personally.
PACIFIC 311 LLS.
5JThe-c are owned by Messrs. Dean
& Co. The machinery is. run by
steam power. The furnaces are sup
plied by a self-feeder, whicli collects
the waste saw dust aud carries it
through tubes over the top to the
long buttery of nino boilers. This
mill is provided with an elegant cir
cular smoke stack, 150 feet high, 14
feet in diameter at tho base, and 7
feet at its top. It was put up with
out the use of a stick of frame work
on the outsido. Tne works turn out
11,000 feet each hour. The sawdust
from this mill averages daily 25,000'
feet of lumber, most of this, how
ever, is used up to feed the engine
furnaces. Tjje imrirflit Is jiravided
with Anty saws, whloh out up 1,000
feet of lumber at a time. The en
gines at this mill have a capacity of
170 hore power, and yet not tho
slightest noise is heard aslt juoves
the Immense mass of machinery.

Tliis employes fifty boys and girls
alone who are constantly buy jack
ing shingles one boy can usually
average from twenty to twenty-five
thousand per day this firm turn
out an average of 180,000 every day
of ten hours. Among the novel
features introduced at the falls for
securing water power is the intro
duction of wire rope as shafting,
which, by means of pulleys, trans
fers the power over distances from
one-half to a full mile from the
source; thee pulleys are located
from 500 to 1000 feet apart, they
havo been in use in Kurope for
many years, but only recently in
troduced at Minneapolis, Tho fol
lowing is a list of the leading lum

convey a general idea to our people
and tlioso of the southwest of the
facilities and latent resources of
Minnesota.
The following is a list of the rep
resentative lumber merchants who
accompanied us on this occasion to
investigate the. lumber question:

After a protracted interview the
following facts were lllicited from
these gentlemen. Average annual
consumption of lumber, in feet, at
points as follows: St. Joseph, ten
millions; Kansas City, ten millions,
Leavenworth, nino million; Law
renoe, six million; Omaha twenty
million. Total average of tho entire
southwest, on line of the new route,
excluding St Louis and vicinity,
about two hundred million of this,
ono-third comes from Chicago and
the balance from points along the
Mississippi.
This lumber purchased .at the
pineries can be obtained at. prices
ranging from $10 to $16 per 1,000
feet The cost of rafting to points
of destination is $1 50 and of re
handling $2, shipping by rail about
$4 more, making tho ultimate cost
of lumber to dealers, when deliver
ed, to range from $15 to $23 50 per
1,000.
The subject of invsstlgation now
is; whether this lumber cannot be
more economically shipped directly
from the lumber mills of Minnesota
by rail to the various pointsof de
livery. Through freight now costs
$75 per car-load from - St. Paul to
Kan&as City, St Joseph and other
river towns. A car-load covers
from 8,000 tolO.OOO feet of lumber.
This makes the cost of handling and
shipping range from $8 to $io per
1,000 feet Should It be found that
even fifty cents per 1,000 can be
saved on freight by purchases at
Minnesota, the dealers say It will
not bo long before the bulk of this
trade will be diverted in that direc
tion. To test tills question practically,
Messrs. Hoagland, Jr. and Sr., of
Omaha and St Joseph, made the
first purchase of about 100 carloads,
which, with a small additional
amount ordered by others, foots up
a total purchase of about 1,600,000
feet

was held, and resolutions of thanks
passed to the various citizens of St.
Paul, Minneapolis and Stillwater
for uniform kindness, and favors
shown them during their stay.

How They Ell-Cattle im -Texas.
The ordinary plan of drawing the
steer down to the block and striking
him on the head with an ox is too
slow for the wholesale butchery car
ried on here. About one dozen head
are driven into a small pen, just
sufficiently large to hold that many
closely packed, and a gate forced to
behind them. This pen has an open
slat platform across the top of
.it,, upon which two men. are sta
tioned with poles and sharp-pointed
Knives nxeu on tne end of them.
With a rapidity-acquired by long
practice,' they -plunge their spears
into the necks of the -affrighted
and struggling animals, cutting the
jugular , vein, and each' successively
falls as if struck down with an
ax. The blood spurts out in streams
as if from a dozen fountains and in
less, than a minute, the ,whole,penful
are down quivering in the throes of
death, and covered with blood. The
door of the pen leading into theren-
uenug room is men uirown open,
the 'animals drawn out successively,
and a knife rapidly slits1 the skin
around, the neck and down the
stomach. A rope is attached to the
upper part of the hide by a clamp,
to the other end of whinh U n.
J mule, which leisurely walks off
uown the yard, carrying the skin of
the animal with him, and leaving
the carcass still quivering with
animal life. A tackle hoists the
body up to a level with one of the
immouse cauldrons, and in less time
than we have taken to describe the
Erocess it is in the seething and
ailing mass. Thereare four or five
of these cauldrons, each largo
enough to hold a dozen beeves, and
aud they are kept constantly going
during tho killing season. The
tallow is drawns - off- - Into
large hogsheads, and the. remains of
these 8oup-kettlea are carried out on
what is called the "hash-pile," con
sisting of bones, horns, and the
animal matter from which, the fatty
substance has been extracted. '
