The long contested election case
for the City Treasurer's office, was
concluded Saturday evening before
the City Council. Judge Doane,
for Johnston, opened and closed
the argument, and J. I Webster,
Esq.j.argued the case for Baumer.
It was then moved by Stephenson
that Johnston be declared the elec
ted treasurer, andSutphen seconded
the motion.
A letter from Vandegrift was here
introduced by the President of the
nnnnnil. The Clerk read it. Van
degrift stated in this letter that he
had testified against Johnston while
under the influence of liquor, that
he had done it out of revenge, and
that his evidence was not true.
Considerable pointed debate en-
.suedon the introduction of this let
ter, and its effect.
" A vote on Stephenson's resolution
was'taken, resulting a.s mjght be
expected, in favor of Johnston, the
seven Democrats voting for him,
and the five Republicans for Bau
mer. Had all the eloquence and logic
of Daniel Webster been added to
that of the Hon. J. L. Webster, it
could not have moved any one of
tfye seven JJeinocratic Councilmen,
who were as immovable as the rock
of G ibraltar. They had their minds
made up from Ihe beginning of the
case in favor of Johnston.
The vote was as follows:

Ling in sleep, tired nature's sweet re
storer. Some unknown thief pried
open a window, entered the Judge's
residence, lie a match or two, and
after gobbling up two silver nap
kin rings, and a hat, lit out When
he learns what a good haul he could
have made, he will undoubtedly
agree with the poet, that of all the
sad words of tongue or pen, the sad
dest of all are "It might havebeen.,"
He might have captured
a hundred dollars' worth of silver
ware, which was standing on the
table; he might have appropriated
the Judge's gold watch and chain
in his vast, and $200 in his panta--loons;
he might have confiscated
the gold watches and chains of the
Judge's wfe, son-in-law and daugh
ter, and he might have got a dose
of cold lead, had he, in his explora-
tions, awakened the Judge, who.
had a big seven shooter under his
pillow. The Judge says "it might-
have been" all up with that'
prowler, had he had an opportunity
to pull tho trigger on him. He
thinks that the thief must have
been frightened, as a lamp from
Governor Sauuder's house shone
into the room. He is satisfied with
the result, and says the thief is
welcome to what he took.
