A Word to Trnvclon.
Wo have a word to aay In favor of the Mis

to St. Louis. With tho Improvements that
have been made during the past year, wa be
lieve that tho Missouri Pacltlo railroad haa the
best track and the tluest and safest equipment
of any line west of the Mississippi. It Is the
only lino which runs three dally express tralna

with the Miller platform and the patent air
brake, from leading polnta In tho West, through
Kausaa City, Sodolla and Jerlerson City to bt.
Louis, without change, connecting at St. Louis
with eleven different through routes to points
north, east and south. No change of cars from
Omaha to bt. Louis via this route. Particular

The weakest of nil newspapers in
theso parts announces moro "change."
Change is tho law of its dilapidated
being. Without chango it would die.
Tho trouble with it is that it never
changes for tho better, but always for
tho worse. It would take a capablo
editor and journalist flvo years to re
store it to a decent respect among in
telligent mou of its own party. It is
n fact universally conceded that the
Omaha Republican is tho least read or
respected of any newspaper ever
printed in this State, not except
ing tho Fort Kearney Central Star.
When it recently removed Ben Bar
rows from tho editorial department of
tho paper, it of courso removed all
tho writing ability of tho concern.
The substitute is nn average ed'ort,
and he will do it his way. For activ
ity and llatncss he is an improve
ment on his predecessor. Mr. Bar
rows will hold on to tho "Treasury."
Although not a muscular man, that
gentleman will not bo likely to find
this sort of holding a very heavy
strain upon his physical powers.
Tho chameleon does not change its

Tho steamer Mollio Moore, when
it arrived hero from St. Louis, could
not pass under tho railroad bridge,
owing to tho height of her smoke
stacks. Tho captain swore, and tho
pilot tore, and tho wrath of the
twain was only mollified by the tak
ing down of several lengths of pipe,
a task which occupied two or tlireo
hours. At nino o'clock tho craft
cleared tho bridge, and started up
stream, tho captain giving tho iron
structuro a farewell "cussing." Those
river men will do it. It comes as
natural to them as chewing tobacco.

TH03E CARPETS.
A Horror of the Springtide.
Tho Uticii Hciidd remark . that the
annual ceremony of taking up, and
whipping, und putting doivn carpets
is almost upon u. It is one of the
Ills which llesh is heir to, and can
not be avoided. You go home some
pleasant spring day at peace with
the world, mid find the baby with a
clean face, and get your favorite pud
ding for dinner. 'Then your wile
tells you how much younger you are
looking, und says she really hopes

if you can't just help iter about
taking up thu carpet. If you aro a
fool, and you generally aro by that
time, you tell her ot course you can,
just as will as not. Then sho gets a
saucer fur the tucks und Htantls ami
holds it, mid you get the claw, and
get down on your knees and begin to

take them out carefully and put them
in tho saucer. Your wile is gootl
about holding the saucer, and be
guiles you with nn interesting storv
about how your neighbor's little boy
is not expeeteti 10 live till morning.
Then you enmo to tho tack witli
a crooked head, aud you get the
claw uuder it aud tho head comes off,
and tho leather conies oil) and the
carpet comes off", and ns it won't do
to leave the tack in tho lloor, because
it will tear tho carpet when it is put
down again, you go to work and skin
your knuckle, and get a sliver under
your thumb nail, and tell your wife
to shut up about that everlasting
boy, and make up your mind that it
docs not mako any diflercnco about
that lack, and so you begin on the
cornor whero tho carpet is doubled
two or three times, ami has been
nailed down with a shingle null.
You don't care a continental about
saving the ni.il. because you find that
it is not a good timo for the practice
of economy; but you do feel a little
hurt when both clauses break oil'
from tho claw, and tho nail does not
budge a peg. Then your manhood
asserts itself, and rise iu your might
and throw tho carpet claw at the
dog, aud get hold ot the carpet with
both hands, and the air is full of dust
and flying tacks, and thero is o fringe

Then you lift ono side of tho stove,
and your wifo tries lo get tho carpet
from under it, but can't, because you
aro standing on it. So you try a new
hold, and just after your back breaks
tho carpet is clear. You aro not
through yet. Your wifo don't tell
you any moro little stories but she
gets your old coat und hangs it on
you, and smothers you with tho car
pet, and opens tho back door and
shoves you out, and intimates that
the carpets need whipping. When
you hang tho tormenting things

and get it righted, and have it slide

Finally tho carpet is down, and the

your wifo smiles sweetly, and says

What irCoats to go to San
Franoisco - An Eoonomic
Consideration of the Trip
A Few Interesting Facts.
Tho price of a ticket to San Fran
cisco and back over the Union Pacific
and Central Pacific roads is a little
less than three hundred dollars. To
this must bo added tho expense of
seven or eight days' meals averaging
three dollars a day, also tho addition
al expense of a compartment iu tho
Pullman car. Without this latter
the journey would bo unendurably
fatiguing; with it, it is surprisingly
comfortable. Upon tho margin of
the long railway map lumished
to travolers wo read that a
sleeping berth from Now York
to fean Francisco can bo procured
for eleven dollars, which certainly
sounds remarkably cheap. But this
docs not mean a section, or oven half
a section ; it refers to tho minimum
spaco, that is, half of ono of the
berths, upper or under, three other
persons occupying tho rcmaider of
the section. Now fow persons can
bo really corafortablo with less than
a whole section, certainly no lady
traveling alono could bo, and a
whole section cost fortyfour dollars.
It will bo seon therefore that a com
partment in the P. P. 0. is n consid
erablo item in tho expenses of tho
trip. Hotel charges in California nro
not so high as with us, being three
dollars, sometimes llbt two dollars nml
a half it day. Carriage fares are
cxcecetlingly dear; utace fares lp
than in the Hast, on the White Mono

be easily seen that it is safo to esti
