Oi: Dowin is tho successful bid

will consolo his friend O'llaldwin for
wasting n much genuino eloquence
nl that jollification over Col. Lapp's
dispatch,
I-'kom thu Washington Chronicle we
glean that tho Grand Army of the
Republic is reorganizing. Ve pre
sume it is the intention of its Ilrevet
commanders to nrgnnio an expedi
tion against tho Modocs or the U. S.
Treasury.
If it takes four editors to furnish
tho leaders of tho Lincoln J.emkr
with intellectual pabulum, how
many Miotild it tako to fill the coN
unins of a firsUcliifs city daily, or
cen an unpretending journal like
the Omaha Daily I)i:n.
Mui.i.irrs monstrosities furnish a
prolific theiiio for the dyspeptic re
porter of tho Chicago Time. The
monstrosity in question is to bo the
postollico and custom houo of Chica
go, and will cover an area something
less than half n milo square.
Tiik cable informs us that the
Greek and Roman Monks, stationed
nt Bethlehem, Palestine, had tried
tho virtues of their creed by pound
ing each other. It was certainly in
bad tasto to prove their faith in
Jesus in n pugilistic encounter at his
birth place.
A Ciiuuno Times "condenser"
says :
An enterprising photographer has
gone to get some views of the lava
beds. Jlo considers himself entirely
ife,-as tho Modocs will tako his ma
chine for a traveling howitzer, and
give him a wide berth.
The Bee would not wonder if that
berth when measured would cover a
spaco of six feet by thrco.
General Sherman is always prac
tical in military matters. Ho is not
in favor of scalping Modocs, if for
no other reason, becauso there is no
advantage gained by scalping a dead
Indian. Wo presumo, however, the
General won hi not object to n sur
gical operation on the cranium of
every livo Modoc Hint roams among
the lava beds.
Gov. Keixooo's Now Orleans or
gan says the Governor is determined
to put a stop to all tho various plans
that have been in voguo for plunder
ing tho Louisiana State Treasury.
For this purpose ho has employed a
competent force of detectives. Par
tics looking after Mrs. Sinytho will
probably find her now whero sho can
do tho most good for Kollogg.
The Lincoln Lender, having re
centiy changed proprietors, also an
nounces a radical change in its edito
rial department. Rev. Chas. Little,
formerly of tho inline County Pott,
is now tho managing editor, with
three assistant editors to help him
through his arduous labors. Wo tip
prchoiid tho proprietors of tho Leader
want but "Little" bore bolow and
want that "Littlo" long.
Ai.ex. II. Stephens is trying to
bolt soap President Grant, wo presumo
with a view of controlling a littlo
Federal patronage. In a recent edi
torial article in tho Atlanta Sun, the
ox-Vico President of tho Confederacy
says: "Wo know General Grant,
aud believe him to bo no ordinary
man; neither do we bcliovo him to
bo sordid or corrupt." From any
other source this sentiment might bo
accepted ns a compliment.
What, if anything, is being dono
by our Board of Education, or Su
jerinteitdent Nightingale, wRh refer
ence to tho introduction of German
itit our public schools? Some
months ago circulars wero sent
around to parents requesting them to
stato whether they wanted their chil

wero nt tho tiino informed that tho
replications wero in favor of such in
struction by overwhelming majori
ties. Siuco then tho whole thing has
been permitted to slumber, and sinco
nobody seems to tako it up, the Br.i:
