At about 8:30 President Culver announced the first num
ber of the Program, an overture by the university orchestra.
This was followed by with an invocation by Rev. C. B. New
nan. Dr. C. E. Bessey, acting chancellor of the University
of Nebraska, with a few remarks welcomed the visitors to
Lincoln, the "city of colleges." After the rendition of "The
Miller's Wooing," by the university double quartet, the con
test began with Mr. W H. Wise, of the DePauw university,
Greencastle, Ind. We have heard much of the oratory of
DePauw and naturally expected much from her representa
tive. We were not disappointed. Mr. Wise spoke on "The
Race Problemn." The subject is an old one but it was
handled in such a manner that the speaker held the attention
of the audience throughout. The race problem is a living is
sue in our national politics and it would be well for our coun
try if there were more orators to plead for the rights of the
negro. Although some of Mr. Wise's gestures were a trifle
awkward one forgot all such minor defects on account of the
earnestness of his manner.
When the audience had ceased to applaud. Mr. Robert
Tucker, of Butchel College, Akron, Ohio, appeared upon the
stage. Ohio carried away first honors last year and natur
ally the expectations ot the audience were high. Mr. Tucker's
oration was "Democracy, the Dominant Idea." The gestures
were very profuse, and had they not been so natural and so
forcible this excess would haye detracted from the merits of
