From Prof. H, B. McCollum, Supt. City Schools, Central City, Neb.
In making a iccent put chase of a cyclopedia for use in our public schools, 1 did a good deal of woik in the way of
examining and compaiing cyclopedias. In comparing Johnson's Univkksai. Cvci.oi'r.niA with the last edition of
Appleton's, which I have in my own library, I find it (Johnson's) later than Appleton's by at least ten yeais, and, especially
on live scientific subjects, sometimes mote than that. I also compared it with the International to some extent, and the
result was I puichased Johnson's. The moic 1 see of it, the better I like it. l'or school use especially, I consider it
preferable to any I 1 ..e seen, including Appleton's, Chamber's, Library of Univeisal A'nowlettge, International, and
Britannica,
Mk.ssks. A. J. Johnson iS: Comi-am, Publishers; III n Alo, N. V. Deeembci 21, iSSS.
Gentlemen: -The next fe years will witness a gieat change in educational ideas. The possibilities of self-culture
are to be emphasised, and the means of aid and ditection inci eased. After a caicful examination of "Johnson's Universal
Cyclopedia," I am convinced that while it is excellently adapted to the need of piofessional and business men, it is
eminently useful to the earnest, thoiough self educator. This woik, with its coips of contributor, offeis accurate articles
on the widest range of subjects. To the value of tiustwoitln infoiination is added the ins.pit.nion of peisonality associated
with great names. I heaitily commend this cyclopedia to all, ami especially to those who are ptttsuing self-set courses in
the great university of life. JS2r(Hishopi Jmts II. YtNci.Nl, Chancellor Oiautnumia Univcisity.
