G THE HESPERIA N. ft STRA Y PICK-UPS. Surprise and dire astonishment doth course across my brain, For now our girls will organize u squad for drill again. Our guns they wish to handle for with us they're not content, But they soon thereof will weary, only leave them to their bent. Guy Gere has not yet returned to school this term. They say Webber was infatuated with Zozo don't! They say Cope cried because somebody took his hat. Many of our people went to see the Booth-Barrett combi nation. Have you seen "the draw gags and the jolly chaw gristic Yankees?" The board of regents of the University were in session during vacation. The Juniors got there, the score standing twenty-one to nine in their favor. Campcn, who had not been in school the first part of the term, showed up April 10. Some of the boys wish ardently that the curriculum offered a half dozen "Shakespeares." O. Wileoxen, first year student, has been compelled to quit school on account of poor health. They say that Duucanson was trying to catch bugs for entomology by putting salt on their tails. Miss Appelgel, who was last year with the Junior class, visited friends heie a lew day last week. They say that Cope got a pud' in the business college paper. It was of a rather questionable kind, however. Miss Eva Schurtz, of Brownville, who was in school two years ago, visited friends in the city March 27. Some new glass doors have been put on the book cases of the chemical department. A good improvement. Some of our entomology students, they say, do field work in the duplicate boxes of our sympathetic Juniors. Thomas Allen has been sick, but not so sick that he has been forced to loose any work, lie will soon be with us. They say that Webber so far forgot his prohibition views as to dance a breakdown and indulge in a cannabalian song. Professor Lloyd has been unwell for the past few days and has consequently been forced to neglect her work in the University. Newcomer, Fletcher & Co., reflected great credit on the University of Nebraska by their superior management of Booth and Barrett's "Julius Cajsar." The University has been supplied during vacation with some much needed apparatus for use in case of fire. A standpipe has been erected in the main hall. W. C. Knight, one of our old students, who has been doing extensive geological work in Wyoming, was seen in town and about the building during vacation. A new class under the charge of Professor Mathcwson has been formed in the subject of how to beat the professors out of hours. The class recites twice a week on the east steps. Arbor Day will be celebrated with considerable pomp and pageantry next Monday. The authorities have discovered the appropriateness of the occasion and will undertake to lay the corner stone of the Grant Memorial hall. To assist in the ceremony the state officials will be present and the state militia will be called out. The Junior boys will visit Roca wheie th'J Junior girls, who will have proceeded to the city the day before, will give them specimens of their accom plishments in the housekeeping line. All other classes except the Seniors and First Preps will celebrate as the spirit moves them. ' The other day a certain prof, astonished his class and dem onstratcd the charms and advantages of higher education by dropping from his pocket a couple of photographs of cigarette beauties. Fow that we have a base ball club let us have it well sup ported. There appears to be no reason why we should not have a few interesting games with some other college teams of the state. Dr. Billings' bulletin will be out by the time this issue is published. The doctor has been for the past three weeks in New York selecting apparatus and material for the continua tion of his work. The reason for the lateness of this issue is that the volumes of smoke pouring from the door of the office frightened the workmen on the Memorial Hall into turning the hose on us and thus delaying our work. At a meeting of the Societas Classica held March 14, the following officers were elected for the spring term: President, Mr. Pound; praeses vicorius, Miss Benedict; scriba ordinorius, Mr. Farmer. A prominent member of the Junior French class was recently heard mumbling to himself these words: "He who flunks and runs away may live to flunk some other day; but he who in exam, was slain will ne'er have a chance to flunk again." L. D. Bailor, clothed in a plug hat and full beard, but we were glad to see minus the traditional cane and eye glass, was seen in town in vacation. Having just graduated from a Chicago medical college he was on his way to Geneva, Neb., there to begin practice. Brown's oyster parlor, directly on our way home Friday evenings, is a standing temptation to the boys. These, together with "The Little Gold Dust" on the other side of the street form a veritable Scylla and Charybdis between which we must daily guide our barks. The spring work on our new buildings, especially on the Grant Memorial hall has begun with a will. The foundations of the latter are already up, and judging by this progress and forgetting the history of our laboratory it would seem that the building ought to be completed by next September. The lits arc about to loose their beloved. Flctchei has taken a great inclinatioli to the scientifs. He has also found out that the water in the qualitative lab. comes out of the stop-cock with considerable force. Say, lits, let the experience of him and Hall be warnings to you not to "monkey" with scientific apparatus. Base ball seems to have so enthusiastically attacked every one that the Seniors have challenged the faculty to a match. It is rumored that the faculty have among them a prof who in his earlier days was a professional pitcher for the Cincinnati nine, and we warn the Seniors to keep their eyes pretty widely "peeled" or they may put their foot in it. It strikes us forcibly that this time the Athletic association has been set upon its feet to stand. A mass meeting of the boys was held in the zoological laboratory at five o'clock Tuesday, April 10, unci officers, etc, were enthusiastically elected: president, Stephens; secretary, Marsland; treasurer, Mallalieu. A prourain was submitted, and although the bovs did build some of their intentions on the sandy hopes of a J gymnasium, yet we are constrained to think that the Athletic
