Intter. A college stocked with children becomes chained to
the daily routine of technical drill, leaving no room for the
broad drill which should be inseparably connected with it .
And children, hurried through the common brances at school,
in order to enter college early, are eitficr cramped through
out life by their superficial knowledge, or they force the uni
versity course to deteriorate to accommodate their ignorance.
We believe that the function of the college is not to teach
'readin,' ,ritin' and spellin,' " to fit the carpenter to handle
the plane, or the farmer to plow, but rather to guide the as
piring mind through the realms of science, literature and
art.
Let us have a few real colleges and they will be stocked
with thinking, earnest students. Thus the high schools and
seminaries will rise to meet the demand and furnish advan
tages to its pupils who remain there. In this way a spirit of
thoroughness will pervade our schools and the general tout of
intelligence raised.
A Junior co-ed of Minnesota University, inspired by a sere
nade of two Junior youths, gives vent to the following poeti
cal outburst: ,
"Hear the war-whoops and the yells,
Fiendish yells!
What a tale of terror, now, their turbulcncy tells!
How they sound, sound, sound,
Through the icy air of night,
While the fish horns all around,
At the windows do resound,
With a Lucyfcrlikc delight,
Keeping time, time, time,
In a sort of "giddy" rhyme
To the bloodcurdling illation that so pathetically wells
From the yells,
From the hooting and the whoop ng of the yells.
