i lik "HESPERIAN STUDENT. ft j if i IK Ill's cupac.ty dopcnds directly upon education. Our rich mine, our dunso forests, our broad and fortllo prairies, all our natural resources aro of uso to us only as our (ruining Ills us to grasp and uso thorn. Tho object of nil systoniB of education should bo to produco efficiency in evoy tiling that portalns to tho general woll faro. Since the arts are tho foundation of material wealth, and consequently of all prosperity, aro thoy not tho solid basis for tho training of offlciont men ? When wo consider that evoy discovery, every invontiou which renders labor maro effectual is a triumph of mind over matter, and that every such victory is un application of a scientific truth and that tho power of scienco without art as a conveyance is dead; is it not evident that these powerful agonts should bo closely united and nourished in the same school? In this wuy knowledge is converted into "intelluctual musclo." Much of Amorican in ventive genius is due to tho education of men who from experience kuow tho drudgery of toil and cun appreciate the laborer 'a needs. Mr. White chose as his subject tho character of our late President, Jus. A Garfield, and said that great men and great evonts have been sparsely distributed throughout all the ages of the past. Only at raro intervals does nature seem to have concentrated her forces in order to develop tho higher possibilities which inhere in mankind. Progress paused, and industry took a holiday when Alex ander and Ctesar came to the front. But greater and grander than they, Homer and Shakespeare marshalled tho intellect and led forward the humanizing aspirations of the world. But "Westward the tide of Empire takes its way," and the best seed of Europe was winnowed to plant this virgin soil. And, warmed by the sun of prog resa, and fanned by the breezes of freedom, the great Washington nppears, the greater Lincoln, and, the model American, the greatest Garfield. In nearly evory placo where man can be tempted and liied, Garfield had proved himself competent aud true. In every place his mind was clear and his composure unshaken. Now he is com ing slowly but surely into the presence of the king of terrors. But the sun hi his evening glory is not more serene. There was no death-bed repentance, no tremor of fear nt this new experience. "But sustained aud soothed by an unfaltering trust he approached his grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about liini and lies down to pleasant dreams." In the full maturity of his powers, enjoying the confidence and affection of his countrymen in a preeminent degree, and with the highest honots of the nation lasting upon him he closed his grandly successful liie. Garfield is truly American; he is the joint product of the Protestant faith and our republican institutions. His record is a heritage to the nation; Ins wisdom and his works, his integrity and suet cess shall arouse the emulation of the young as long as personal wortli shall be esteemed among men. W. A. Tris took up "Stepping Stones," and showed that in the mind of men isadiscontcntmcutjwiththeir present condition aud attainments; the word advance revers -berates throughout the whole earth, and in every one is an aspiration to reach the stepping stones The Egyp tians 1 joked into tho cradle of science, saw the dawn of a comiug develogcmcnt. The Grecians rcarched a higher plane, boing a polished thinking people, who united beauty and grandeur in the execution of all their works. The Romans following in the footsteps of their predecessors became tho mighty heroes in tho fields of of oratory, jurisprudence, and arclii lecture. Tho beauti ful tcmplo dedicated to tho arts and solonccs was embel lished, beautified and rebuilt oven higher than over be fore, by such masterspirits as Danto, Petrarch, Michael Angolo, and Raphael. Yet, that glorious temple so uulquo, lacked lt3 capstono and mighty dome to make it a unit. Tho union could ouly bo perfected by roaclis ing n higher plane of intellectual devclopemont, where true religion and culture joins hands.
