THE HESPERIAN STUDENT. i 1 i i ' r Tho University is gottlng famous for primers. Wo have German, French, Spanish anil sometimes English primers. The latter, however, occur only In this moilcl shoot and of course aro above criticism. The young gentlemen who so delight In serenading under the society -windows while tho program is being delivered, should see tho musical committees and sing within doors where tho wind doth not conupt nor police como out nud nab. Again Lincoln has produced a feature worthy of herself in tho M. E. Church chorus choir singingschool. The tonic-sol fa system is in use aud by singing in the choir the weary student ma', study music, elocution, gymnastics, etc., etc., to his hearts content. Let us sing. In order to preserve quiet in the halls and prevent their mutilation, the Faculty have appointed the janitor a spec ial police aud have ordered the University doors closed at 8:15. The societies have also received suggestions as to locking doors during the program. For some reasons these are good moves. Considerable change is to be made in the Armory. It has been removed to the basement, where the Cadets can drill in stormy weather, without breaking down the halls w itli their feet and guns. The government arms, which wc had, have been sent back and hereafter we are to have our arms supplied by the State. J. Sterling Morton was tendered au invitation to do. liver an address to the students on Arbor Day, but not being able to accept (he invitation, owing to his prcvlou arrangements, we had to content ourselves with listening to the reading of his letter containing his regrets, which, however, wound up with some very appropriate remarks pertaining to Arbor Day. Last year Arbor da' was observed in fine style on the campus. Many a tree was placed in fertile soil which shall in after years spread its foliage, to the air aud suns light, shading the laz', bandbox college crank yet un born. This year nothing was done, not even digging up, as was suggested by a few persons to be a good plan, some of the pigmies stuck out last year. The latest excuse for absence from recitation is the celebrated silk handkerchief-dodge. We have seen various method tried but this far excels all others, both in, perfection and simplicity; it works like a charm, unless perchance, some mischievous Frcshie, much concerned in his suffering friend, removes hypocrisy's mask from tho painful malady, as was done in the case of a noble senior recently, when the scheme does not work out quite o admirably. The Church building boom has at last taken hold on this city. On the 29th. ult. the Congregational Church decided to build a 15,000 dollar edifice, to be commen ced soon. Tho Methodists on the same day, decided to erect a new Church building at a cost of $25,000 or $30,000. On that day over $10,000 was subscribed. If there is any thing in which this town has presented a poverty stricken appearance it has been In its Church architecture. Let the good work ga on. We learn from an article hailing from the south that students of southern colleges are entirely honest and have no desire to cheat during examinations; that a Prof, is perfectly safe in leaving a class, being examined, and wa'.king two miles away for his dinner. Now wc don't say this is untrue, but dlsbeliovo it nevertheless. Our southern brothers and sisters can't bo mora trustworthy than students in tho North; aud If a Prof, shouldjtry that up hero, on returning from Ills repast, ho would find tho examination completed, papers graded and tho result handed Into the registrar. The following essay subjects aro on the Bulletin board : Sophs and Freshmen: Venice in tho Middle Ages; Politi cal Futuro of the South; Causes ofFailuro of tho Greek aud Roman Republics; Spelling Reform in English It is Desirable, Is it Practicable; Burns and his Influence on English Literature; Ireland in the Eighth and Ninth Cen turies ; The Latin School ; Charles Marlel ; The Celts in Eu rope ; Tho Zend Avcsta; The discovery of Ireland; Phoenici an Traders; The Dialects of tho English language; Tho First Cznr ; What is Egyptology ? What Is Indo-European ? The Five Great Generals of History. Essays are duo May 0th. Arbor day, this year, was culebratedjby a picnic, instllut cd, organized, equipped and selected by the Freshman fair On that eventful day, two omnibus loads of prim Uuivor sity students fled the city and proceeded "Jessup in the country a little way." Nothing sciious occurred on the way except puns. Arrived at their destination the crowd dispersed aud botanized, croqucttcd, strolled and coquetted, until tho full lunch baskets coming up, brought peace and quiet to all. A moonlight ramble, the quiet ride; home, the beautiful music aud, and, well that finishes the tale. Some, however, think that the Armory has far higher uses than those for which it is usually employed.
