Most, of these institutions have been liberally endowed, and u largo amount of money has been given to insti. tulions which are "scarcely mentioned in tho list of our principal educational cstab. lislunents. One of the greatest of Amer icnn colleges, an institution which pos sesses more claims to the title of Univer sity than any other American college, tho University of Michigan, which instructs nearly 1,00 students for a merely nominal tuition, has received scarcely any aid from individual benefactors.
