SALUTATORY.
The writer takes great pleasure in mak
ing his bow to the roaders of the Student
as Editor-in-Chief from I'all-idian Society.
Wo express our thanks to tho moinborsof
the l'alladian Society and our many non
partisan friends, who exerted their inllu
oncc to elect us to this trying and impor
tant position. Knowing that our tenure
of office depends upon tho will of our con-.-tittionts
and that in fact we are responsible
to them for the welfare and succor of tho
Studknt, we t-hall put forth our every of
fort to carry out thoir most 6anguine ox
iuctatioiis. In accepting this position wo
know wo are imposing upon ourselves an
additional amount of labor, and from ne
cessity shall look to our fellow students for
aid.
Tho paper is not only in sad need of
financial support, but it expects contribu
tions of a literary character from all those
who have the time to write an essay or an
oration.
Many of lib lack the qualities necessary
to boa good writer and we often feel tho
want of them. Let us take advantage of
an instrument like the S'f udkxt and use
it. Wo shall not object to receiving two
communications from the same person.
All wo desire is plenty of material. Wo
ask the students to drop all little animosi
ties, put their shoulders to the wheel and
help us make the IIkskbiukn Studknt
one of tho bot college papers in the land.
We again thank our friends for their
support and hope our course in the future
will ever merit thoir good opinion.
D, II. Mkhcku.
OUR BXUUSK.
Our patrons will ploao exctue the insul
lleieiii'v of this, tho llrst None of the present
editorial corps. It was our intention to
opon the now year with a number full, con
cise and adequate, but interference and in
terpolation on the part of pseudo gentle
men, have obstructed our labors and de
spoiled our bast desires. In this issuo wo
have omitted our advertisements, not in
tentionally, however, but bocauso five well
developed youths, physically wo mean,
stole, at least without our knowledge and
consent, carried off oight pages of adver
tisements and concealed them in some
hoiiEo distant from the city. AVhen we
heard of this piece of vandalism, the of
ficer of tho Board of Manager, lined their
utmost endeavors to ferret out tho hiding
place of thoir property. It w tracked to
