In the Oberlin (Ohio), Evangelist, dated August, 18.")8. we observe an article on the admittance of females to State Utmcrtties. A Junior student, of Cornell Uuivcrsi'y, in rendering an account to his father ol his last term's expense, entered an item : "Charity $:10." In haste! one of our freshmen, the other day who observed one of the Profes sors approaching while endeavoring to crowd a vast amount of tobacco through one of the grates in the hall. Friday evening September 25th, first de bate in the Literary Society, question, "He solved, that foreign immigration should be encouraged,"' in which the affirmative was maintained with considerable skill by Mesrss. Street nnd Metcnlf, while the negative was iqually represented, by Messrs. Dales and WnHingford. The question wns deeided in the affirmative. Declamutious by Messrs. Whipple ond Steuvson, and also an essay by Miss Benton wire hiithly appreciated. The exercises Friday evening, Oct. Gth, were quite interesting. Cadtnan and Cropsey represented the gentlemen in the declaiming class ; and Miss Bissoll, the ladies, with credit. J. S. Hovey and Griss. Negative Messrs. Hurd and Field. Decided in the nlliriuiitive. The exercises of Friday night, the lUih, were decidedly the best we have yet wit hered at the Palladi m. The debate was especially good. The hall was crowded with visitors, uho paid strict attention, and who frequently applauded. The question, "Resolved, That Compulsory education is Beneficial," was ably discusied by Miss Kelly. Messrs Stevenson and Rhodes on thu affirmative ; and Messrs. Snowdon and Swan on the negative. The Chicago fire burnt most of the pub lic school houses in that city. With their usual energy, however, inert used by the severe extremity to which ihev are reduced, tho inhabitants of that place are preparing to rebuild.
