j Professor G. W. A. Luckey head of

the government normal school at
Manila at a salary of $3,500. Tho offer
is for threo years. This was not so
licited by Mr. Luckey and is a com
plete surprlso to him.
V Mr. C. B. Chowlns, instructor in
mechanical engineering, has mado a
yifbativo tachomoter. This instru
ment is used to determlno the varia
tions of speed In an engine. There are
but four other such instruments in
Uio United States. Tho new apparatus
will bo set up in tho steam engineering
laboratory.
Subscriptions amounting to about
.eighty dollars for tho purpose of fur
nishing tho girls parlor and restau
rant, havo been paid by tho girls gym
nasium classes. Great enthusiasm has
bean shown by tho girls over these
rooms which they will begin to furnish
next week. All glrlB not in tho gym
nnslum classes aro asked to contribute
something to this fund.
Geo! W. Pinneo, now secretary of
tho Y. M. 0. A. at Hastings,
visited .tho university last week. Mr.
Pinneo was a student at Northwestern
and whllo there was prominent in all
branches of college life. Ho was prom
inent in his fraternity, Digma 'Nu n

Delicate experiments aro now going
on under tho supervision of Professor
Emerson of tho horticulture depart
ment at tho green houses, in tho crca
tlon of new varieties of carnations by
tho crossing and propagation of old
standard plants, which they havo on
hand. Tho buds of one plant aro fer
tilized by those of others and it Is
hoped, that before long Bomo valuable
varieties of plants may bn tho outcome.
Somo of tho ordinary hardy pinks are
also used in tho experiments.
Mr. Cornell, University Photogra
pher, Is preparing cuts for a now folaor
Illustrating tho campus. It will con
tain besides other views, interior and
exterior representation of tho now
Memorial Hall. It is similar to tho
pamphlet published last year. Mr.
Cornell, has spent considerable time
this fall In enlarging photographs il
lustrating tho water falls of Nebraska.
These pictured woro taken during tho
summer by Mr. Cornell and Prof. Bar
bour and have been used in publica
tions of tho U. S. Geological Survey.
Those interested in extoraporaneous

Professor Barbour of tho geology de
partment is spending a few days in
South Dakota in the interest of tho
U. S. Geological survey. The trip is
similar to several previous ones which
havo been talcen recently. The sec
tion visited is north of Valentine, Neb.
and is noted for its scenory. New
specimens of photographs illustrating
tho wntqr falls of Neb. and So. Dakota
will undoubtedly bo added to tho pres
ont collection of the department. Pro
fessor Barbour .ind Mr C. A. Fisher
will bo engaged in tho interests of the
U. S. Geological Survoy during tho
Christmas holidays.

second meeting last Wednesday even
ing, and completed its organization.

provision for tho admission of fresh

andfaurth Wednesdays-of each month,
at which a program will be given and
a few minutes devoted to general dis
cussion. Occasionally professors and
prominent engineers will address tho
society.
William Reed Dunroy, who has been
so successful as a writer of Nebraska
poems that sell, like Eugene Field,
'Richard Harding Davis, Winston
Churchill, Gcorgo Ado, and a score of
tho other noted writers of tho present
generation, recolved his training from
work on the dally newspapers. Mr.
Dunroy began by "making the rounds"
for tho evening Post. Then in quick
succession followed positions on the
Evening News, tho State Journal and
tho Omaha Bee. Mr. Dunroy loft
Omaha to take charge of tho Platts

tune overtook him, the entire plant, in
which he had invested all his money,
burning to tho ground about six
months ago. lie is now locnted in
Sioux City holding a leading position
on the editorial staff of the Sioux City
Journal.
Tho Nebraska Historical Socloty will
hold its annual meeting in tho chapel
on tho evenings of January 8th and
9th. Tho principal subject to bo dis
cussed will be tho Old Grange and
