last Wednesday. Ho was looking for
an. old pair of stirrups which he had
found about twenty-Bix years ago,
near Rlvorton. Tho stirrups aro of
old Moorish make and aro Bupposcd
to have been lost by some party of
Spanish gold hunters, and aro proof
that the searchers came inland as far
as Nebraska ut least. There were
several parties who came inland in
search of tho precious metal. Cor
anado's in 1541, Penalosa's in 1GG2
unci various others. Which of these
lost the stirrups of course we cannot
tell but it la supposed to have been

which show that this latitude was
reached.
The history of the.3e stirrups since
they were found is quite interesting.
Mr Prather gave them to a friend of
his to bring to the State Historical
Society and they were turned over to
Prof. Samuel Anghey who was then
in charge of the library. Mr Anghey
sent them to the Smithsonian Insti
tute not knowing what they were.
There they were identified aa being
of Moorish make and the kind used
by Cornado's gold hunters. They re
mained at tho Smithsonian for sev
eral years but were taken out later
by some one from Nebraska suppos
edly by Senator Paddock, without
permission. One was given to J. E.
Lamaster of Tecumseh, tho other to
a friend of his and all trace of it is
lost. Mr.Prather, however, still
claims to own them, and said that ho
only brought them to tho Nebraska
Historical Society for safe keeping.
He intends looking them up and re
covering them.
