The parado lead to the front ot the university grounds on R, there to take part In the dedication of tho Spanish cannon. This relic of tho lato war is located on th?" campus just south of tho library building. C. O. Whedon was the orator of tho day and as ho began his talk the cannon was unveiled. The cannon Is mounted on a pedestal built of brick, capped with stone to fit the bearings of tho gun. Several university people took part In tho parado. 1 H. McPherrin of the law college Impersonated General Scott, Li. R. Ewart Impersonated Gen eral Grant, Many of the soldiers in these two divisions were university boys. George Bartlctt was flag bearer for tho veterans of 1812. The battalion of cadets and univer sity bnn'd took a prominent part In tho parade. Mr. Whedon during his speech gave a short history of the cannon. It was as follows: "At tho time of its creation the place where it now Tests was Spanish terri tory. At that time, the population of the United States did not exceed three and one-half million people. "It came from the bands of tho man ufacturer when Charels 111 was King of Spain, that timid monarch who, fear ing the effect of independence upon his omt colonies in America, refused to unite with Prance in open espousal ot the cause of the American colonists; at the same time, apprehensive of los ing by his refusal the friendsbip of France, secretly contributed 1,000,000 francs in aid of our ancestors then en gaged in their memorable struggle for liberty and independence. "When from this gun the first snot was fired Napoleon Bonarpart, who af terwards placed his broth upon the throne of Spain, was a lieutenant of ar tillery. It had been in commission for ten years when the remains of Colum bus were placed in the cathedral of Havana, there to remain until the treaty of Paris extinguished the last remnant of the sovereignty of Spain in the new world which its subject had discovered."
