The Phi Beta Kappa oration by Pres ident Slocum, of Colorado College, will bo given in the opera houso, on Wednes day June G at 10 o'clock In tho morn ing. Prof. 0. V. P. Stout made a trip to Norfolk and Arlington last week to In vestigate tho work of tho guaglng sta tions of tho U. S. geological survey work. Dr. Sherman's now edition of Tenny son's ' Princess," published by Henry Holt and Co., Chicago, will appear this week. This edition has been prepared primarily for use in tho classes here at tho university. Prof. 0. V. P. Stout wont to Omaha Monday to meet Elwood Mead export in charge of irrigation investigations of the United States department of ag riculture, and to confer with him In regard to Nebraska work which Prof. Stout has charge of for tho coming year. Word was received in regard to Dr. L. E. Hicks, who was for many years professor of geology in this university. Ho is at present at the head of the Baptist College in Rangoon, Burmah. Ho Indicates that ho is enjoying his life very greatly, and feels that the rest of his life will bo spent in this far away country. The Omaha Commercial College will nave enrolled at tho end of the pres ent colleee year over twolvo hundred students in all departments. The Summer Term opens Monday morning. July 9. Tho Fall Term will open Mon day morning, September 3. Cataloguo and elecant specimens of penmanship froVto any address. Among the fellowships awarded at Columbia university, New York, last week was one to Alvin Saunders John son, of Dakota City, in economics, who holds his bachelor's and master's de gree from the University of Nebraska; also one to Hartley Burr Alexander, in Philosophy, who holds his bachel or's degree from the university in '97. Dr. P. A. Rydberg, '91, curator of the herbarium of the New Botanical Garden, called at tho chancellor's office a few days ago. He is in the west to collect and study botanical ma terial for the institution with which he is connected and also for the Uni versity of Nebraska. Ho will collect about Lincoln and in tho western part of the state for a time, and ultimately goes as far as southern Colorado. Monday evening May 14 at 8 p. m., Mr. A. E. Carter '01 of the department of civil engineering will give an illus trated lecture to the engineering stu dents in room 211, Mechanical Arts building. Mr. Carter before entering the university was connected with The Montana Power Co., and held a respon sible position in the construction of their dam and plant. All interested in engineering are invited to this lec ture. The great Ecumenical conference for foreign missions recently held in New York City has stimulated an interest in that line of work In all parts of tho country. Next Sunday an echo meet ing will be held in tho chapel as a joint meeting of the Y. W. C. A. and the Y. M. C. A. to which all students are cordially invited. Three of those in tho university who are preparing to go to the foreign field will speak on the subject: "Why I am a volunteer for the foreign field." All students should attend this meeting as it doubt less will do the last union meeting of tho year. Sunday at 4 p. m. THE UNIVERSITY RECORDER. Miss Mabel Tuttlo assumed her du ties as university recordod, tho first of tho week. Two years ago, Miss Tuttlo held a place in tho oxecutivo ofllco but gave It up to accept a position on a Chicago paper. Her now dutlos hero as recorded will bo numerous and of a varied character. She will bo secretary to tho appointment committeo and ap plicants for schools will consult her In tho future Instead of Mr. Crabtreo, whom it is difficult to seo becauso of his continued absence from tho city. Miss Tuttlo will also keep tho records of tho deans, minutes of all faculty committeo meotlngs, and of tho uni vorslty senate. Sho will also act as stenographer and assistant to Dr. Lees, the oxamlnlng dean. Her ofllco will bo in room 104, University Hall. A new system of Shorthand, called tho Gregg, is now being taught at tho Omaha Commercial Coliego, Omaha, Nebraska. This system differs from Pitman and Graham In that it has but one position, one slant, no shades, less than 200 word signs, is four times as legible, and admits of great speed. It can bo learned in half tno time, and is well adapted to all purposes for which Shorthand is used. Anyone thinking of becoming a stenographer should write at once for information about this now system. Northwestern University . o . . The course is graded and covers a period of four years.
