Dr. Uessoy and Dr. Lees are tho university representatives in this body and oyijort to attend this banquet. - Notices have boon received at tho chancellor's ofllco of tho congresses of various kinds to bo hold in Paris in connection with tho great exposition. Of these not less than eleven are in pure science, six In medicine and hy giene, eleven on educational topics, nineteen on applied scionce, ana twenty on social and economic subjects. Sev eral of tho professors are hoping to attend some of these. , The University of Nebraska club of Chicago has postponed its annual dinner until April 7, at which tlmo there will bo a great lovo feast of university people in and around Chi cago. It is hoped that a number of the faculty of the university, Ex-Hegont "Esterbrook, Acting Chancellor Bessey and others will be present. Mr. Har vey B. Hicks writes, "Tho delay does not mean a poor dinner rather tho reverse." Monday we Inaugurated a sale In our Music and Picture department. "We placed on sale about 5,000 pieces of sheet music at 5c and 10c each, which aro usually sold by us at 20c and 25c and at double that price in music stores. This is not tho usual cheap 5c and 10c music, but publica tions of such well known houses as 'John Church & Co., S. S. Brainard & Co., Shirmuer's, Dittson's, Lyon & Healy, Shurburtus and others. We also began a sale of picture moulding on the same date making a rate of 3c per foot and upwards. Music and Picture Department, Herpolsheimer & Co. JOINT DEBATE. Three students of tho Kansas City school will meet three students of the law school of the Missouri university in a debate at Carrollton, March 17. Aa a preliminary debate at the Kan sas City school, W. H. Haleti, H. E. Dean and ufford Snow were chosen to represent the school. The question to bo debated Is "Resolved, That tho aggregations of capital in the form of tniBts aro detrimental to the welfare of tho people." The Kansas City men will have the negative side. Chas S. Marsh, of Brunot, T. E. Corley, of bt. Paul, and G. . Wagner, of Mlddloton, have been selected to represent the university law school. DETROIT SCHALARSHIP. In 1891 tho Detroit high school alumni association started a fund for the purpose of assisting graduates of the Detroit high schools to secure an education at the University of Michi gan. Since time date nineteen stud entB have been sent to tho university. Nine of these have been graduated from tho university and ton aro at present pursuing studies In tho insti tution. In 1893 tho Detroit high school scholarship fund association was in corporated. It derivoB Its lucomo from three sources as follows: (1) sub scriptions of $50 each, (2) endowments for permanent scholarships, (3) tho profits from reunions and Juorary ex orcises. The assistance rendered from tho scholarship fund in considered as a loan. In no case does It exceed $250 a year, It is paid to those holding the scholarships in monthly installments. Scholarships can bo secured only by students Intending to graduate from tho literary departmont of the unlvor slty, and preference Is given to those desiring to pursue tho course of study leading to tho degree of bachelor of arts. SHAKESPERIAN CONTEST AT UNIVERSITY OP MISSOURI. Tho annual Shakespearian contest ot the Missouri state university will bo given somo time in April. Tho Shak espearian contest was not given last year, but this year there Is so much dramatic talent among tho students that It Is thought tho contest will bo unusually Interesting and close. Lib oral prizes will bo given to tho win nors. Thore will probably bo three cash prizes. Tho amount of each has not yet been decided upon. Several students have already manifested their Intention to tako part in tho contest, and others will probably announce themselves in tno near future. Sonor y Rublo Lopez, of Cuba, Is one of tho students of the University of Missouri. He was quite intimately connected with the struggle of Cuba for freedom and for several months during tho late Caban war served j.s a sergeant and two years as a second lieutenant on tho staff of General ' Gomez. While on that general's staff ho was entrusted with several im portant missions, ono of which was to enter a city in tho possession of tho Spanish and make a plan of tho place. Another was to make a typog raphical map of ono of tho Spanish positions while under fire. Near the close of tlie war he was promoted to a first lieutenancy. Ho had several personal encounters with the machette, being wounded In two places. Ho has taken p, baphelor's degree at the Uni versity of Havana and Intends to take the dogree of mechanical engineer at xuiRsouri university. There is also a Puerto Rican enrolled at the university.
