American universities ought to be the first to free themselves from such a spirit The broader basis should brj the phys ical welfare and advancement of the whole race. We are too prone in ath letics, as in other things, to specialize and to make no effort toward our own and general advancement in lines where we cannot excel. Athletic de velopment ought to become a feature of all culture, a part of the furnishing of every well-ordered man and woman. Such a change, moreover, would mean the raising and not the lowering of the plan of intercollegiate contests.
