THE NEBRA8KAN-HKSPKRIAN.
A
LITERARY NOTES.
ThoSo who welcomed tho nppcivranco
of Ilnnhnel, tho initial number of tho
Riverside- art scries, ng meeting in nn
admirable way a very distinct need,
will be glad to learn that Houghton,
Miflln & Co. have just published an
other volumo of this sunm n..ina
llombrandt, bj Estello M. Kuril.
Tho book is equipped with introduc
tory matter in tho way of chronologi
cal tables, biographical sketch and his
torical directory of the pictures such
as was supplied for tho Raphael;-tho
body of tho book is likewise made up
of three or four pages of simple, inter
pretative text for ench of tho sixteen
pictures, and a pronouncing vocabu
lary of proper names is added.
Miss Hurll tells tho story of the pic
tures in simple, untechnical form,
bringing out tho symbolism, if any,
and tolling tho legends pictured by tho
artist. These pictures arc chosen to
show the mosi representative styles of
the artist's work, and among them will
be found "Jacob Wrestling with tho
Angel," "Israel Blessing tho Sons of
Joseph," "The Rat Killer" (etching),
"Tho Philosopher in Meditation" and
others.
, Several interesting numbers have
boon n tided to tho Riverside literature
series since tho beginning of tho school'
year.
, "Chaucer's Prologue" (No. 135) and
"The Knight's Tale, and Tho Nun's
Priest's Tafe" (No. 136), edited by Pro
fessor Frank Jewctt Mather, .lr., of
Williams College. This select on from
the "Canterbury Tales," especially
edited for the Riverside literature
scries, makes a good working book for
classes in schools and colloges, as there
is an equipment consisting of an intro
duction biographical aad critical, sep
arate introductions to the talo3 and the
prologue, an nppendix o various load
ings, and a glossary. Tho whole work
is done with .scholarly care pud will re
pay examination.
"Books I, VI, XXH nni XXIV of
"Homer's Iliad," transited by Wil
liam Cullon Bryant (No.v i;!7), are too
well known to need special mention
hero. This number is made more use
ful for schools by an introduction,
notes and a pronouncing vocal"ilary of
proper names especially prepared for
this edition.
"Hawthorne's Custom House, and
Main Street" (No. 13S) is autobio
graphical in a certain sense, as it gives
in the first skech the introduction to
"The Scarlet Letter" an account of
Hawlhorne's life in Salem when sur
veyor of the port. The other sketch,
"Main Street," is from "The Snow Im
age and Other Twice-Told Tales." In
a very interesting and novel way tho
history of Salem is picturesquely told.
The introduction for this book relates
certain facts about Hawthorne. Note3
explain historical allusions.
