THE NEBRASKA-BE3PERIANN. n - 4l 3 . GYMNASIUM NOTES. Basket ball Is In full force In the gymnasium. Each company of the battalion and each class of the uni versity has organized a team. A change in the date for the games with the city Y. M. C. A. was made. In stead of January 20, as advertised last week, the game will be January 27. The players for the contest will be as follows: Y. M. C. A. (Lincoln) Han cock, captain; Woods, Hamil, Johnson, Humphrey; Hagenslck, substitute. University E. Andreson, captain; R. D. Andreson, Cortelyou. The re maining two men have not yet been se lected for the university. Several good players are trying for the places. The agreement to hold each year an intercollegiate strength contest was adopted at a meeting of the college gymnasium directors in New York City December, lSi)9. The strength tests to be used in making up the total strength of any individual will be strength of bark, strength of legs, strength of right forearm, strength of left forearm, strength of lungs, or one twentieth capacity of lungs, strength or upper arms (triceps) and chest, strongth of upper arms (biceps) and back. , In taking these tests for the first and second must be used the leg and back dynamometer; for the third' and fourth, hand dynamomete:. fifth, spirometer; sixth, triceps, dips; seventh, o.ceps, pull-ups. All tests must be made consecutively in the order mentioned and be completed within fifteen minutes. A rest of one minute, uowever, will be allowed be tween the last two, as these are usu ally taken to test the power of repeat ing efforts and to try the action of the heart and lungs. Hosin or chalk may he used upon the hands in all the tests, but no artificial aid in the shape of straps, belts or harness will be allow ed. By May each year each institution will publish the record or its fifty strongest men examined that year in the order of their superiority. The in dividual having the highest total shall be deemed the champion strong man of all the colleges, and the. institution having the fifty strongest men, as de cided by the largest total store, shall hold the total strength trophy for the next year. The University o, Nebraska has not as yet been representor in this contest, but will take part this year and with her large number of strong men will expect to make a showing. Amherst, a small college in Massachusetts, which pays special at tention to physical training won fifth place last year in competition with the much larger eastern schools. Each Saturday of every week a preliminary test will be held to prepare men for the regular test. Saturday the leg test will be held at the gymnasium at 3 o'clock. PROP. FLING HONORED. During the holiday meeting of the American historical association, held at Boston, Professor F. M. Fling was selected as a member of the committee on material. This committee will have superv.s.on of all material submitted for final publication. The work un dertaken by this committee is that of publishing four source books, one each on Grecian, Roman, mediaeval and mod ern history. Professor Fling will be in charge of arranging and selecting the material for the Greek history. Pro fessor Monroe of Pennsylvania will have charge of the Roman, Professor Burr of Cornell of the mediaeval and the appointment of morlorn history has not yet been made. In the edition of this work Professor Fling has final disposition of material from recog nized sources on this subject and the appointment to so responsible a posi tion is Indeed a groat honor to the university.
