but not for long. He tried again

The okl professor with a m'schievous
twinkle looked over his glasses and
said, "Grease her knees once more,
Theodore, and maybe she'll go."
Wo do not know whether he had the
uncommon nerve to go on or not. Ex.
Two hundred and sixty-flvo students
are taking work in American history.
This is the greatest number which has
'ever been registered in the depart
ment at ono time. It is ten per cent
more than took the work last year.
There are more students in this de
partment than were in the university
when Prof. Caldwell, head of the depart
ment, graduated in 1889. Up to 1882
the university had less than this num
ber of students. Thirty-two courses
arc offered in this department. Besides
this there arc some six or eight courses
given alternately, so that it would re
quire a student about two and one-half
years to complete all the work offered
hero in American history. It requires
four instructors. Prof. Caldwell lect
ures in fivo courses, Roscoe Pound in
four, C. E. Perslnger in two and Mrs.
J. A, Reed in one.

HONORS FOR DEWEY.
The "University ofhjeago faculty
lias decldeu to grant Admiral Dewey
the honorary degree of LL. D. The
matter lias not been announced offi
cially, owing to Admiral Dewey not ac
cepting the invitation to attend the
festival celebration. The degree will be
conferred next year, when he has con
sented to visit Chicago. Admiral
Dewey will be the second man to re
ceive aa honorary degree from the Uni
versity of Chicago, the LU D. con
ferred upon President McKInley Inst
fall having been the first.

The Twelfth Annual Course of Lectures will com
mence on the 10th day of September, 1890, and will
continue eight and one-half months. The course is
graded and covers a period of four years. Medical Hall,
the Laboratory of Medical Sciences, the Laboratory of
Medical Chemistry and the Laboratory of Anatomy are
situated upon the University campus. The clinical op
portunities afforded by the hospitals and dispensaries of
Minneapolis and St. Paul are at the command of the
College. For out-door clinical service a new clinical
building has been built in a central location.
