ONE ON TEDDY.
A good story in told of Theodore
"RooBOvelt, the popular New York man.
It happened when ho was a boy. Once
for Friday afternoon ho had to learn a
recitation. Ho choose Halleck's "Marco

tle like young Daniel Webster in re
Bard to his first attempt at speaking
i slightly liable to bo confused. He
.began
"At midnight in his guarded tent,
The Turk lay dreaming of the hour,
"When Greece, her knees " He paused,
but not for long. He tried again
"When Greece her knees Greece her
knees."
The okl professor with a m'schievous
twinkle looked over his glasses and
said, "Grease her knees once more,
Theodore, and maybe she'll go."
Wo do not know whether he had the
uncommon nerve to go on or not. Ex.
Two hundred and sixty-flvo students
are taking work in American history.
This is the greatest number which has
'ever been registered in the depart
ment at ono time. It is ten per cent
more than took the work last year.
There are more students in this de
partment than were in the university
when Prof. Caldwell, head of the depart
ment, graduated in 1889. Up to 1882
the university had less than this num
ber of students. Thirty-two courses
arc offered in this department. Besides
this there arc some six or eight courses
given alternately, so that it would re
quire a student about two and one-half
years to complete all the work offered
hero in American history. It requires
four instructors. Prof. Caldwell lect
ures in fivo courses, Roscoe Pound in
four, C. E. Perslnger in two and Mrs.
J. A, Reed in one.

FUN FROM OUR EXCHANGES.
A VISION.
In sadness was my soul cast- down,
Then bloomed a sight to give me aid;
Anil 'on its slefvo a tag marked
'"Paid."
'Twas Daphne in a charming gown,
HER 'CONTINUOUS PERFORMANCE.
Jane played solitaire and, see,
Paresis Is the penalty;
Not for Jane, though nay, oh, nay
But for thoBO who watched her play.
A CHURCH EPISODE.
The preacher was nn ugly man,
Who wabbled in liis gait,
And so his parish made a plan
To let him abdicate.
Ho left, but fate was fair, at least,
And fixed these folk unkind;
On thorn she dumped a pretty priest,
Who wabblod in his mind.
