CAPTAIN WILLIAMS RETURNS.
Captain Williams of tho unlvornlty
foot ball team arrived In this city Sat
urday from Colorado, where he has
been spending tho summer for tho ben
efit of his health. Ho says that he is
greatly Improved and thinks that bo
vill bo able to begin practice Immedi
ately, "with tho team. In spoaking'of
thtf schedule, ho said that there wore
thrccf gamfcs definitely arranged to bo
played on the homo grounds. Tho visit
ing teams will bo Kansas, Missouri and
Kansas City medics. An effort is
still being mado to got a game with the
University of California. If any of the
other teams of tho mlddlo west deslro
to enter with Nebraska for a movo of
this kind it is thought that an eastern
trip can bo .arranged for the Callfor-
nlans, which will include two games.
No gamd will bo played with tho
University of Iowa on Thanksgiving
day, as has been the custom In the past.
Kansas offered serious objections to
this game, and in order to keep peace
In the -league Nebraska allowed her de
mand, tn place of tho Omaha game
Iowa will play the University of Illi
nois, while Nebraska has no game at
all for that day. It is probable that
Tarklo and Ames will both have games
with Nebraska this year, but neither
will be played here.

MUST MARRY.
If a girl In Russia wishes to study
at any of the universities in that coun
try etiquette does not allow her to do
so until she is married, so she goes
through the civil ceremony of marriage
with a man student, whom very prob
ably she ha3 never seen before, and
this marriage is quite legal, though
perhaps they may never speak to each
other again. On the other hand, if
they llko each other and wish it they
are married for life; If they don't the
marriage Is dissolved when their uni
versity couse Is finlslied and they are
free to marry some one else. The cele
brated mathematician, Sonya Kova
levskl, whoso autobiography attracted
considerable notice a few years ago,
went through the marriage ceremony
with r student whom she then saw for
the first time, and who afterward be
came her hudbojid. The education of
women in Russia stands better than in
most Kuropean countries, owing to the
persistent efforts of the Russian women
themselves. By 188G they had man
aged to get four university colleges for
women, with 1,442 students; one med
ical academy, with 500 students, and
numerous Intermediate schools. There
are 700 women doctors in Russia, of
whom nearly one-half are employed in
the civil service, chiefly by the zemst
vos. Ex.
