There is a groat deal of misunderstanding among university ptudonta in rogard to tho appropriation by tho legislature. Many thought, that when tho ono mill levy waB so gonorously vo'ted last month that all our troubles wore ovor. But, now, every day or so there coraon tho report from a tho capitol that the appropriations have boon cut. While tho ono mill lovy will furnish sufficient revenue, yet not ono cent of it can bo used until the legislature appropriates it. Tho Regents can only recommend such appropriations. Tho Regents asked for some $24:0,000 for salaries next year and the House out this to $210,000. They asked for $90,000 to build a gymnasium and this amount was cut to $30,000. Tho party in powor seems to care to spond more for building insane asylums and ono horse normal schools than to build up tho University. There is no joke about this matter. Tho party that strikes at tho University will suroly regret it. Why, tho ono thing above all others that Nebraska can point to with pride is her university. It is tho groat equalizer of tho state. By its influence, class fooling is obliterated. A great university has been built up, and whether tho legislators think so or not, it is tho pot of the state. The taxpayers will never have anything but praise for a wise and judicious expenditure of mohoy for tho university. Debates. The Unions will discuss tho advantages and disadvantages of the jury system at their next meeting. Next Saturday night tho Palladian club will discuss the proposition, "Resolvod, That tho benefits resulting from the Greater American Exposition at Omaha will justify the under takings." Colorado has consented to put off the debate with tho Uni versity on account of the conflict with the oratorical contest here. Tho date will bo a few days later than proviously arranged. Tho Dolians at their last meeting discussed tho quostion in rogard to increasing tho standing army to 100,000. The topic for noxt Saturday is, "Rosolvod, That the single tax on land would bo a more equitable system than tho present one." In tho oloction of officers, Chas. Jones was elected president. Thp Dolian club has made arrangements to dobato with Wosloyan April 7. Tho question is, "Resolved, That tho United States should form a protectorate over tho Philippine Islands until the inhabitants are capable of solf-govornmont." Wosloyan affirms the proposition. Tho dobato will take placo at Wosloyan. Union Girls' Program. Tho following is tho Girls' Annual program to bo givon in tho University chapel Friday evening, March 24, 1899. Music.
