THE HESPERIAN
BIXBY'S RETREAT.
Happy Now Year.
Thoso Now Year resolutions!
The follow who tries to flatter you is a fool or he thinks you
are.
With Paul Clark for speaker of the houso and E. M. Pollard
leader on the floor, the Nebraska legislature has but to elect
Chauncey Warner or me United States senator, pass a few ap
propriations, draw their salary and adjourn, to win the grati
tude of a long suffering public.
Misfortunes never como singly. Now that the excitement
incident to the outbreak of smallpox has somewhat subsided,
Jimmy Searson returns to inflict himself upon this college
community for another three or four weeks. We could vacci
nate in the case of smallpox, but what can wo do' in the case
of Jimmy Searson?
WHIST.
I played at whist, that's what 1 did,
The trump I tried to make a heart,
The hand 1 held was good.
Confound it all, right there's the rub,
Her dear papa saw through the game,
At once ho 'lowed to stop the same;
And so for trump he named a club,
Tho hand ho held was good.
DID YOU?
I was seated in the alcove
Gazing out I know not where,
When you, passing so sedately
Looked my way, and met my stare.
Since that day I've wasted hours
Simply gazing hero or there,
Wondering if you really could have
Winked at mo, 0 maiden fair.
