Sloan Fratcrnfitfes The Yidette Reporter of Iowa City takos copious extracts from the Hesperian of last week and gives the credit to the Nobraskan. Wo cannot believe that a deliberate insult was intended. Oratory real, genuine oratory must succeed this year. Wo must make double the effort to have the intor-stato contest a success. This can only bo done, it seems, by the University winning the state contest and thus having the representative in tho inter-state. The real, important work to do, then, is to got together tho very best material we have and from that material select by close, earnest, enthusiastic competition tho one who shall have tho honor and tho privilege of pleading tho cause of tho University of Nebraska, and tho State of Ne braska in tho intor-stato contest next May. plan to moot this ond is being considered and as .soon as ySS formulated will bo made public. " A spirit of inquiry seems to bo running through tho college papers to ascertain just what true college spirit is. Then, again, our brethren are just a little confused in regard to what is the best manner to treat University affairs. Williams Col logo, has formed a press association to suppress all news that might be detrimental to the college Tho Crimson-White of tho Univorsity of Ala., seems to think that each college paper should blow tho horn of its Alma Mater until each student gets a pronounced case of "big head." No doubt, there is some good philosophy in this but tho Hesperian is not willing to go as far as Williams College has done. If college journalism doeB anything well it should bo that of giving tho news and news should be absolutely impartial. If anything contrary to estab lished principles happens in a college and especially in a state university supported by tho people's money, tho pooplo have a right to know about it. Secrecy would bo criminal. But what is true college spirit.? Does it consist in attending foot ball games and in making tho bleachers ring? Does it consist in celebrating victories in hilarious mannor with bonfires and accompanying events? The Hesperian boliovos that those aro manifestations of tho spirit. True college spirit will load to tho earnest, hearty support of all legitimate collogo enterprises. V . Tho Department of Botany has rocontly received some ira portant additions to its apparatus in tho form of a Heat-Moter for running klinostats, a Holiostat for use in studying tho ef fect of light on plants, a Microtome of tho "Camdridgo Rocker" variety for making thin sections of plants in tho Botanical Lab oratory. This microtome can bo adjusted to cut sections from twenty microns in thickness to half a micron (one twolvo hun droth to one fifty thousandth of an inch). Tho students in Gon oral Botanv (Botany 1) will uso this machine. vr It is anticipated that a preliminary oratorical contest will bo necessary this year in order to reduce tho number of contest ants for the local Univorsity contest. More have already registered for tho contest than tho total number who entered in tho last two years. Tho societies have arrangements on foot for holding special socioty contests, thoro being several from each socioty who intend to compete for tho honors of oratory. Tho. local officers aro pushing tho work along with vigor and earnostneos. Special effort is on foot to have every organization possible represented in tho contest. Tho officers intend to oxtond a personal solicitation to oach and ovory socioty and fraternity in tho itnivorsity, and urge upon thorn the importance of being represented and of lending aid and support to tho work. An effort is also being pushed to havo the prizes for the contest ready in cash at an oarly date. A GET YOUR MONEY'S WORTH Tho marble composition statuettes that Kimball Bros, at 1500 O street havo in their marblo factory are delicate and artistic. Groat generals, admirals, musicians, statesmen aro modeled. Tho famous works of tho world's greatest masters aro thore, also. Tho little coon, who sits astride a chair with a half smoked cigarette in his hand, is tho swollost coon in town. Thoso statuottes will mako elegant Christmas presents. Thoy will adorn rich homos and will not bo out of place in moro humblo onos. v.
