We considered Handler, Hawxby and Taylor invincible, and no one thought defeat at the hands of the Missourians even a remote possibility. But defeat it is and we must make the best of it. However, let the Tigers understand that their victory is but temporary, that we will even matters with, them in '99. Have you subscribed to the cinder track fund? If not, do so at once. The faculty and alumni stand read' to do their part; it only remains for the students to do theirs. The mass meeting Friday morning in the interest of the Kansas-Nebraska debate was encouraging to everyone believing that foren sics have a place ia University life. What has become of the petition which was sigued so liberally by the students re questing that the library be opened on Satur days at eight o'clock? Such a policy would certainly be profitable to a large number of students. No one can doubt that there would be a number of students who would be glad to be at work at this time. Many of the stu dents come a considerable distance from their rooms to the various boarding clubs for break fast, and are compelled to waist at least an hour before they begin work in the library. Others are only too anxious to come a little earlier on Saturdays to put in a good day's work. If there be suflScient reasons for not opening at this hour, then all i well; but no such reasons have ever been divulged. The following from the Kocky Mountain News concerning our representatives to the Colorado debate ia self-explanatory: "Two bright young men from Nebraska University and a young woman, whom Gov ernor Adams not inaptly termed a modern Portia, gathered the honors at the intercolleg iate debate on Friday evening at Colorado Springs. They won their victory fairly and are entitled to congratulations on their success The representatives of Colorado College were clearly outclassed in the contest. The Ne braska disputants were more mature, more experienced in debate, more accustomed to handling themselves before an audience and. furthermore, had the best side of the question. Defeat at such liands means no discredit to the representatives of Colorado college, who made an able and vigorous presentation of their side of the question. Of course the de cision of the judges involved a disappointment to the students and friends of Colorado col lege, but the knowledge and experience gained in the contest will in the end compensate the disputants for the time and labor they have expended. This event will become a memorable one in the educational history of the Transmissouri country. In all of ite details it was an un qualified success.
