THEOBALD Athletic Base Ball is in favor: the team is showing 'up reasonably well and the schedule of games promises some good contests here al homo and a -chance to prove our metal abroad. Tims far the games played have been more in the "way of practice than aught else. Those of the future will boreal contests on merit. The "working mass of the students is behind the team; it has a loyal support and is worthy of of a peculiar penchant. As a general rule it is team-work that wins debates. With three '-'meets'' in the way -of debating coming on, it is well that this fact be borne in mind. Men working from different points of view are at cross-purposes and their arguments serve but to neutrali'eone another. The best argument is that which is "knit thor oughly together with the parts forming one symmetrically arranged and logical whole, all the parts being interdependent. It is a single fabric with nobroakin'thewarp and no flaw in the woof. It has no seams, no miss-matched colors, no loose drawn threads. To produce such an argument the individuals of each team must consult, agree on a basis of opera tions, arrange the various portions of the field to be covered, avoid repetition and secure harmony of reference, thought and procedure. Hot headed wrangling and narrow egotism will not do. The spirit of concession and compromise must rule where good counsel fails. After all it is not a personal -matter., the great thing is to win for the university. And to win, team-work must be done. It is an essential: we may fail without it. Last year we failed with it, but it is much more satisfactory to accept defeat knowing that mo private pique has boon responsible for the de feat than to be charged with having sacrificed the. quality of the debate to the gratification fit.
