k
some of your victories (?) For instance, if
you recollect. Dear Quill, the Iowa State
Oratorical As'sn accepted your resignation
"with great pleasure" in 1892. And didn't
the "little colleges" western pigmies, under
stand send your orator down to about ninth
place in 1801. And since yon have been with
the "Big Universities" of the East, has your
orator ever gotten above fourth place? And
what about the I. I. C. A. A.? lias not
Grinnell taken that longed for "cup" to be
her own? How are you in the track athletics
anyhow? Have you beaten Rush yet? And
say, would it not be a pious idea for you to
get a clear title to the Football championship
in Iowa before breaking in so suddenly upon
Yale and Chicago and Minnesota Universities?
And is your memoiy sti jng enough to recall
that gama with Kansas? Was it rG to 0? Or
are we dreaming? And then at Omalut in
189G, how many days did it take you to de
feat Nebraska? And would you kindly tell
us what the score at Council Bluffs was last
fall? You figure well, Dear Quill, and since
you do will you please calculate your exact
position in the athletic world? Tell us your
exact position in track athletics, in oratory
and football. And, say, did you not meet
Nebraska in baseball last May? And was not
the score 14 to 9, and that on your own ground?
Do j'ou really think there is danger that you
may 'jeopardize" your position in athletics.
If so, pray tell us what you have in store to
put in jeopardy. The wails you have been
uttering would not indicate that it is money.
Say, Quill, is it not mostly braggadocio? Be
honest now and tell us truly, are jou not
whistling somewhat to keep your courage up?
Have jrou ever been troubled with swelling of
the capital appendage? Arc you qufte confi
dent that you had not been to see the "Cherry
Sisters" the night proceeding the writing of
that editorial? We leave thee now. Think
on thyself and all thy greatness, thy brain,
thy braun, thy courage and thy courtesy.

"A.uistr'ttlia and tlio islands of the
Sea."
This is the latest of Silver, Burdett & Co's
"The World and Its People" Series of Geo
graphical Readers. The wide diversity of its
subject-matter, the variety of its illustrations,
together with its numerous maps, give this
book a peculiar interest to the student or even
to men of affairs. So far as the Hesperian
knows this is the first volume ever devoted
wholly to all the islands of the globe.
This book will prove a revelation to such as
regard the islands as small and unimportant
parts of the world. Here are given the varie
ty of formations, the distinctive characteris
tics, a discussion of the natives their curious
habits and customs.
As a supplementary reader and an auxiliary
in the study of geography the book has a
place alreadjr made for it through the wide
popularity of the earlier volumes of the se
ries. It is none the less a book that will be
interesting to adult readers, and its value for
home libraries, for reading circles and clubs,
is indicated by the fact that it is a complete
encyclopedia in itself, of the Islands of the.
sea.
