The athletic board is influenced by no 'pull'
and dictated to by no faction. It settles
questions of difference with no end in view
but tho furtherance and elevation of Univer
sity athletics. Tho student body has confi
dence in the board. Questions of importance
are given due time and thorough consideration.
There are no unusual delays, nor is there un
seemly haste in determining matters of mo
ment. "We advise some small boys not to
break their cranial 'cavities' against a stone
wall 'twill save them much trouble and no
little annovance.

Who lias not registered for the preliminar
ies? "Many are called but few are chosen."
Now that the football season is almost to a
close it is time you were thinking about that
production for the oratorical contest.
A University poet sends the Uubpekiax a
'poem' entitled ''Oh, Let Me Die while Young
and Innocent." The 'poet' has the permis
sion of the Hesperian.
The Hesperian is always glad to stop
groundless rumors or correct current misap
prehensions. The infant which was heard
crying, over on the north end of the bleachers
Saturday, is not a member of the staff of our
contemporary.
It is rumored that Kansas is contemplating
refusing to debate with Nebraska as a result
of Saturday's game. The idea is almost too
absurd to be considered. Last year wo ac
cepted defeat gracefully. If college men are
not able to accept defeat, who is? There is
not the slightest reason why Saturday's game
should cause a breach between tho two Uni
versities. If such is tho effect of inter-colleg-iato
contests the sooner they are discontinued
the bettor.
The cause for the quibbling, delay and dis
grace in Saturday's game is not difficult to
find. With the Kansas football team came a
number of sports and gamblers with some six
or seven thousand dollars. They proposed to
convert the occasion into a money making
project. They offered "all kinds'' of odds in
order to get bets. They were so anxious to
get bets that they were overbearing and even
insulting to Nebraska men. Officials had been
selected and everything had been done to in
sure Kansas the game. They felt confident
they would go home with some Nebraska
money. The game had not progressed far
until they saw their mistake. Kansas was
lcing outplayed. Sport, official, coach, all
realized their money was going if not gone.
Every decision possible was against Nebraska.
Despite their efforts Nebraska was victorious.
The result was so surprising to the sports from
the Kaw their loss was so great, that they
would not acknowledge defeat. The result
is all that could be expected under the cir
cumstances. Clean athletics is out of the
question when gambling flourishes.
IVolollew-Oiiv Contemporary.
Some small boys are too very small for us
to bother about. We cannot spare the space
to dignify their violent blustering and slimy
slanders. Anybody (that is anybody who is
nobody) can sling mud; wo haven't time for
such small practice. Let those do that to
whom it is a delightful occupation, who revel
in it, who think it is evidence of intellectual
vigor. They may think it displays acumen.
They are simply mistaken. It doesn't dis
play anything but littleness, eontomptable
littleness. We leave them to their own small
thoughts.
