Last Saturday evening at Chancellor Mac
Lean's home, Prof. Geo. E. Howard addressed
the University faculty on the subject of Ice
land Stanford University.
Stanford University, said Professor Howard,
is really the product of one man. Its presi
dent. Or Jordan, having made a study of edu
cational institutions, had worked out some
theories which he was ready to put into prac
tice in this new and yet great university of
the. west. Faculty meetings arc held but
twice a year; yet this does not signify that
the faculty takes no part in the government
of the institution. There are facultv commit
tees as in the University of Nebraska, each
having its specific work.
Another noteworthy feature was in connec
tion with the relations between students and
faculty. Each student, on entering, is re
quired to choose a department in which he
will take most of his work, and it is really
the professor at the head of that department,
rather than merely the subject lie tenches.

who is elected. It then becomes the privilege
of that student to confer with the professor
whom he has chosen upon subjects concerning
his university course. Each professor, then,
has an oversight of the work of those students
who have elected him, and it becomes his
duty to advise and assist them. Occasionally
a student, after being there for a time, desires
to change to another department. This is
permitted after certain form has been carried
out.
An opportunity was oll'ered for members
of the faculty to ask questions of Professor
Howard, and it was taken advantage of very
promptly.

The V. M. C. A. meeting Sunday afternoon
was held in Delian hall. Rev. Dunning de
livered an address on the study of the bible.
A regular four year course of Riblo Study will
be opened soon. The officers of the associa
tion, have this in charge and arrangements for
taking up the work may be made by consult
ing them.
II. 11. Everett left this week for Chicago.
He expects to take a medical course at North
western University.
I'rof..Swecey thinks that the. telescope which
was sent east for improvements will arrive
here in a few days. He. believes the improve
ments will be of grea advantage to his de
partment. The National Irrigation Congress held a
three days session in the. University chapel
I his week. There wore no chapel exorcises
on Wednesday or Thursday on account of the
meetings.
The begining class in political economy will
be obliged to meet in the band room in the
armory on Wednesdays. No other room of
sufficient size could be found which was not
in use at that hour.
