12 THE HESPERIAN I 1 The management of the law department has arranged for several interesting lectures on various subjects by the present judges of our dijii court, Hall, Holmes and Tib botts, Tro. 0. Watson of Nebraska City and others. W. W. Wilson was circulating a petition last week the purport of which was to change the hour of recitation of the Senior class which at present is from 4:30 to 6 o'clock p. m. This hour is of course very inconven ient for the foot-ball boys. It is under stood that the petition was of no avail. The new quarters for the law school arc a great improvement upon those of last year. The library attachment is of untold value not only allowing law students exclusive use of the books, but saving much time and labor in turning to references during recita tion hours. The law department intends to make some of the academic students hustle for a place on the Kansas-Nebraska debate. It has given formidable representatives registered for the local contest. They are, A. J. "Weaver, W. L. "Williams, "Dad" Coleman, J. W. Rodgers, A. C. Mayer and Mr. Castor. The Maxwell club held its first meeting last Saturday for the purpose of electing officers and arranging work for the ensuing year. Dean Reese and Judge Wilson were both present and favored the club witli in teresting addresses, impressing upon the minds of those present the importance of society work and the benefits resulting from early training in public speaking. The fol lowing officers wflre elected: President, P. A. Powers; vice president, Mr. Castor; sec retary, Mr. Farr; treasurer, Mr. Koenigstein; sergeant-at-arms, A. C. Mayer. The meet ing was quite well attended and the enthusi asm manifest indicates a successful year. It will be remembered that last year the club arranged for several joint debates with local debating associations, each of which was carried out successfully. Such a policy this year would undoubtedly be a beneficial one to the club. The opening address to the students of the college of law was given Monday even ing, October 7, by Congressman Hainer. He is an interesting speaker and his words of advice were keenly appreciated by his audience. Dean Reese made one of those characteristic speeches by means of which he long ago won the hearts of his pupils. Judge Webster and others followed in speeches full of advice and encouragement. The only criticism wo have to offer is that the law boys are not loyal enough to events of this kind that occur in connection with their department. The attendance at this, the opening address, was not what it should have been. It is upon the interest the stu dents take in the affairs of the college of law that its standing in the University de pends. The following resolutions were passed by the Palladian society last Friday night. Resolutions to the memory of W. H. Young by the members of the Palladian Literary society of the U. of Neb. : Whereas, It has pleased our Heavenly Father to remove from our midst our dear brother, W. H.
