EDITORIAL.
Judging from Iho paper, originating in
the University and signed by the chancellor
and the members of the faculty, praying for
reform in the municipal government of Lin
coln, and pledging each of the signers to
work by voice and vote for that end, the
University of Nebraska will stand at the
head of the movement for pure and honest
government in Lincoln. This is as it should
be. It is from the universities and schools,
as well as from the churches of our land,
that that force must rise which will work
out our ultimate redemption as a democratic
people. If there is one part of politics more
thoroughly corrupted than another in Amer
ica today it is the municipal. If the wide
influence which the University undoubtedly
exercises bo but used, as it bids fair to be,
in a positive way in the right direction, the
cause of honest government in -Lincoln will
be advanced a mighty stride.
The Hesperian is not a pu 1 isan of Mr.
E. McNeal's. We i-ncognui' his oddities,
vagaries and eccentricities. But he is a fol
low student; ho has acted honorably and
boon guilty of no misconduct during his stay
hero, and has won real distinctior. on two
occasions because of the genuine merit and
ability he possesses. The 'Character
Sketch " published by the Mcbashan was
discourteous and unkind. A true nobility
of character would not stoop to hold up to
public ridicule the personal peculiarities
which are inborn., even of an enemy. "Mr. Me
scal need not be ashamed of that 'sketch"
the supplement might had it not long
ago loet the quality of shame.
