Ho has n characteristic way of running down the linos of history into the present time. His arguments are original, and his style of delivery never tame. The value of the work done in debating clubs is soon in a contest of this kind. The men who have boon trained in roady, pointed, logical speaking, are the men who make the best' showing in the oratorical con test. Clearly we have a wide field for both kinds of work. While the oration is the more finished product, the debate affords training for it that is invaluable. The two should go hand in hand. The decision of the judges, which gave Mr. Abbott first place and Mr. George sec ond, scorned to give general satisfaction. FACULTY NOTES. At a union meeting of six prominent Fhilogical Societies held in Philadelphia December 26, 27 and 28 in honor of William Dwight Whitnoy, a paper by Prof. Sher man was read. Prof. Lees waB present at the meetings and reports an enjoyable arid profitable session. Prof. Caldwell delivered a very interest ing lecture in tho chapel Wednesday even ing, upon "The Right of the Minority." There was a small attendance which has been characteristic of tho lectures before the Political Economy Club. Prof. Fling lec tures upon "Anarchy" in two weeks, and wo bospoak a larger audience. Students 'in Shakespeare and Browning will bo interested in Prof. Sherman's article comparing "Luria" and "Othello" in the December Poet Lore. Tho last issue of tho University Studies, tho magazine published and edited by the faculty, contains several interesting articles. Prof. Barbour tells of the "Corkscrew Fossils". Prof. Fling writes of "Mirabeau", 1 arid G. W. Gerwig '89, has a long article interporsed with numerous statistics upon "The Decrease of Predication." Mrs. Lees has returned from Europe, and Professor is happy again. They spent tho holidays visiting in Illinois. Prof. Wilson is preparing an addition of Yorgil. Prof. W. O. Jones has returned from Arizona. Prof. Wilson offers a special elective in Plantus and Toronce next semester. About 2,000 American students are study ing in France, and at tho University of Ber lin over 800 American students are in attendance.
